"The lamps are going out all over Europe, we shall not see them lit again in our lifetime."

Sir Edward Grey, Foreign Secretary, uttered these words on the eve of Britain officially entered the First World War. Exactly 100 years later The Royal British Legion is inviting millions of individuals, households and companies to join together in a national moment of reflection by turning off lights between 2200 and 2300 this evening.

Many churches across the UK will be holding a WW1 vigil tonight at the same time. My wife and I will be going to Guildford Cathedral for the vigil where extracts from letters and diaries of soldiers (and their families) from Surrey will be read out. We will leave a single light on in the house as also suggested by the Royal British Legion.

To be honest, and a bit blunt, I'm a bit annoyed by all of this. It is all a bit contrived and populist; I doubt that many people taking part have any real idea of what they're doing, or why, but are simply joining in because it is the done thing. By the day after next they'll have forgotten all about it.
