On Monday 4th August there is going to be a "lights out all over the UK" to commemorate the start of WW1. From 10pm GMT to 11pm. Just thought it was a nice idea to commemorate in this way. Also there is a lot of poppies in the tower of London moat to mark the number of war dead. I would opine that war gaming helps keep the memory alive rather than glorify. Are other members going along with this, I am. martin |

No way will I forget the sacrifices made by my grandfathers generation. I am also a wargamer. I keep glory for my fantasy games and honour for my historic games, certainly anything from WW1 onwards. Jim |

It's going to be an interesting next four years, with more and more people contributing to remembering the 1WW. I reckon the Menin Gate needs a full-blown, blockbuster treatment: the story of how Great Britain sacrificed some 300K lives in the Ypres Salient and thus saved Belgium. The Belgians have never forgotten, and a docudrama would be most fitting. Other subjects arising from the Great War would also be equally fitting for media treatment especially as BIG films…. |

Thanks for letting us know, Martin. At this far flung corner of the (then) Empire, I think most remembrance is awaiting the Gallipoli centenary – not for me, though. I've always been more Western Front focussed than many Australians (although it is getting more attention now with yearly services at Villers-Bretonneux and the recent efforts at Fromelles. Probably because that's where our family war history was centred, I guess. For me, that commemoration starts today (well, yesterday in Australia). Our lights were out – but it was the middle of the night, so not a major sacrifice! The words of Sir Edward Grey are haunting indeed. |
