Hello folks

To the airbrush users out there. What do you use to mix with your acrylic paints when priming/painting your minis?

What do you use to clean it out?

Thanks

Airbrush thinner/extender and Airbrush Cleaner/distilled water….rubbing alcohol at a push.

I use Vallejo airbrush cleaner. The 200 ml bottle will carry you through a big project.

Depends on the paint. I primarily use Tamiya, Testors Acryl, or Polly Scale for airbrushing, and all 3 I use rubbing alcohol. Some particularly dry environments might have more problems with this mix, but here in Pennsylvania works very well. Only use water if the paint does not react well to alcohol.

Do you do 50/50 mix?

What's the ration you use?

I prime using Vallejo black primer straight from the bottle – it's great.

Then – moving towards using airbrush paints that don't need thinning but if I use Vallejo or GW paints I use Vallejo acrylic medium.

The new Badger airbrush ghost paints are worth trying out.

When airbrusing with Tamiya paints I use Tamiya thinner. It contains alcohol. as do the paints, so it's a bit stinky, but good. I usually thin 2 parts paint to 1 part thinner for base coats then 50/50 for subsequent coats.

I have also just started using Vallejo Air paints and use the Vallejo thinner medium with them with great results. You only need a few drops of that with the Vallejo Air paints as they are already formulated for airbrushes.

For cleaning I use Vallejo brush cleaner for both, plus water to flush. I also recently purchased some silicone airbrush lubricant to apply to the needle after cleaning and it has made a world of difference. My airbrushes (a no-brand Chinese one and an Iwata Neo)now have a silky, smooth action all the time.

Scale 75 Primer neat. Vallejo Model Colour & Varnish 50/50 thinner. Vallejo model Air Neat. Anything else that goes through my airbrush that is not designed specifically is mixed 50/50 with Golden Transparent Extender.

I agree with Goober on the lubricant. Be careful using Alcohol with acrylics however, you may end up with a gunky mess.

If you use the Tamiya acrylics make sure to use their Lacquer Thinner and not their acrylic thinner.

For clean up with acrylics Windex, the original blue formula and then flush with water.

I used to use windshield washer fluid but its been a while…

acctingman, I use rubbing alcohol too. The IPMS folks here taught me to add enough rubbing alcohol so that the resultant mix has the consistency of milk.

Helps to have a glass of the white stuff (with cookies!) nearby. wink
