I wonder why war game base boards are either square or rectangular. Is there a valid reason for not using an L shaped board for instance.

Becuase most table (of the dining room, kitchen and occasional variety) are square or rectangular!

None at all.

I've played several games on L shaped boards. It just has to fit the scenario to make sense.

I've also played on a round board, a T shaped board and a + shaped board before.

We played on a donut shaped one once.

But otherwise, I agree. No reason why boards cannot be irregular shaped. It's just that most battles (pre-modern at least) were rectangular in shape.

We sometimes use a L shaped (or T, ou double-L) board to give more dimension to a skirmish.

It gives the impression that the battlefield is very large without having to crawl on it to reach the middle to move the miniatures.

Also the miniatures must walk a long way to reach the far away edges and that is interesting when a role-playing-inspired scenario includes places to explore, NPCs to meet, random encounters, etc.

Most of my gaming until recently was on a round table because a round table is what we had :)

Did a really good game based on Hydaspes on an L shape not too long ago….but it played out as two rectangular battles at 90 degrees to each other.
