"Base board shapes" Topic

All the games I have seen at shows and clubs are played on rectangular or square base boards in various sizes. Is there a valid reason for not having an L shaped gaming area say 6' x 6' for instance?.

Most tables are rectangular.

Most maps are rectangular.

I've played on shapes other than rectangular, but yes, it is rare.

Absolutely none.

This is why when I carved up my last wargame table for firewood I built the new one in sectional pieces. The table I have now has 8 smaller tables making it, made from pine and held up by angle irons and sets of cafeteria table legs bolted to the bottom, and foldable for storage. Each table is 3ft by 48" so that means I can have any combination from a table 3 ft by 32 ft, to 6' by 16 ft. As I rarely have one more than 12' long the two extra tables can be added tot he side if units move off the edge a little, or create any sort of table form I wish from "L" shaped to "O" shapes etc.

The tables are easily made. For each table I took three 1' by 4' pine finished painting grade lumber and put a 1/4" plywood luan base 1'wide across them gluing and screwing it down. On top of that went a 2" bit of perforated angle iron, and through this and into the luan was attached the set of cafeteria table legs which you can get at any real hardware store (NOT Home Depot or Lowe's) they don't carry them.

The reason I am particular on the grade of lumber is that these boards are cut EXACTLY to 1' by 4' where common pine can Is usually a half to a quarter of an inch off. Anyway, this stuff is often made at the mill by taking "ends" of other lumber, sawing it and glueing it together under compression and then cut lengthwise so it often has a cery charming "natural parkay" effect. I don't paint the tops but just lightly varnish them in a natural tone and then put on three coats of man-o-war spar varnish. It gives a beautiful lustrous look tot he table and makes it a respectable piece of furniture.

I also use it for after the game. We clear it away and if we have a large crowd we run three of them together to make a dinner table.

The way to get this past the wife is to note that she can use these for her flea-market garage sales.

Thanks for that Otto I also have my board in four 2'x 4' sections I couldn't see why a War game seemed to have to be played only on a rectangle or square. Also how did you get to reply to this board as I can't find it in the Thursday daily list. I am going to relaunch it again, thank you for your reply.
