No, I'm not going to Frother's, they are a bunch of juvenile twits at best. Their rabid piling-on during the current broo-ha-ha is getting very boring. And their attempts to slip in and interrupt TMP's legitimate business borders on criminal trespassing. Unfortunately, TMP has lost enough good members to be just about their sophomoric equal, just with less cursing.

I don't like the way Bill has chosen to deal with the current issues, I despise the phanboi dogpiles by folks like Rebellyell, Parzival and 28mm Fanatik, who admit that they don't even know what they are supporting, just that if so-and-so supports it, then by Gum, they do to!

So what drove to the point of no return (like you really care)? We now are entertained in the lounge with fratboy bragging sessions about our sexual accomplishments (real or imagined?) on a regular basis. I'm sorry, if I want that type of content, I'll frequent Playboy After Dark. The scenery will look much better than Smokey in his crocs or his tinfoil suit.

So have fun boys and…, well…, mostly other boys. Glad you had enjoyed it!!

Sorry to lose you! Come back in a few weeks, I hope!

Temporary like Achilles30 Jul 2014 8:28 p.m. PST

I find it best to steer clear of the lounge, though I did just make the mistake of checking out the post that put you over the edge. It's almost enough for me as well…

Anyway, I'm sorry to see you go Sir William and hope that you may come back in a season or two.

Cheers,
Aaron

Is there a day on any forum where someone doesn't feel insulted by something someone says?

John the OFM30 Jul 2014 9:00 p.m. PST

Oh, fer cryin' out loud. Why does every exit have to be bombastic and triumphant???
Oh, wait. Mine was. grin
Never mind.

So whats the score? How many "Good" members have left so far? With all the pronouncements of their departure or intention to so all I can remember is 6 or 7? maybe?

Someone else was kind enough to hit the complaint button, which brought that topic to my attention. It has gone away.

Can a European be a "fratboy"?

We've gained about 30 Supporting Members, though. I don't know how many Basic Members we've added yet.

In truth was not the main complaint in the OP what the Stifle and yes even the Ignore function was created for ?

Was all that toil in vain ?

wink

Doug em4miniatures31 Jul 2014 2:34 a.m. PST

Ignore and stifle make things so much better. I've got one person stifled (he hasn't been here for 10 years but it would seem rude to unstifle him now) and 2 ignores – one of which in particular has improved The Lounge experience enormously; for example, the tpic mentioned above never appeared on my Lounge.

So, I think much of what the OP dislikes could be alleviated with the delightful function we know as "Ignore".

folks like Rebellyell, Parzival and 28mm Fanatik, who admit that they don't even know what they are supporting

Yes, TMP has its fair share of tools but that's why ignore is so great and Rebelyell's been locked anyway (props to Bill for that)…

We now are entertained in the lounge with fratboy bragging sessions

…The Lounge is like Needs More Boobies for Deleted by Moderators but you can turn it off or just have a basic membership.

So you're leaving over juvenile posts that no one forced you to click on, or having clicked on them inadvertently that you did not have to read, about which you could easily have filed a complaint, posted by someone you could easily have stifled and/or ignored? Really? Wow.

John the OFM31 Jul 2014 8:45 a.m. PST

Par for the course.

jpattern231 Jul 2014 8:50 a.m. PST

As I've said before, I wonder how many of the "dearly departed" were the same ones who pridefully stated that they would never, ever use the Stifle and Ignore buttons "on principle."

John the OFM31 Jul 2014 8:56 a.m. PST

That's a very good point.

KatieL31 Jul 2014 9:18 a.m. PST

"And he's a Frother now."

Is this like that stupid thing there used to be with bank accounts, where you were only allowed one current one and had to prove to the new bank you'd closed the account at the old bank before they'd speak to you? Cos that was a flipping pain.

Are we only allowed to pick one forum to be on now?

Texas Jack31 Jul 2014 9:21 a.m. PST

I think the irony is that he was complaining about the rather vulgar talk in the Lounge, which is in no way even close to the vulgarity displayed at Frothers.

I remember those banking days too, that really sucked. But at least you could get a free toaster by changing banks.

Weasel31 Jul 2014 10:35 a.m. PST

I must say, the gloating and crowing over who leaves along with speculation and veiled insults is really helping make this site a friendly place to hang out.

Sergeant Paper31 Jul 2014 11:58 a.m. PST

Can a European be a "fratboy"?

Frat Boys call their organization and lifestyle "Greek Life", and if they're Greek, then they're European, right?

I got all my indoctrination and hazing and boyish antics over with in the US Marine Corps… college life and grad school was a decade of coasting after the Corps.

Yeah, I concur with you Weasel.

I'm afraid the unnecessary "investigative journalism" didn't help much either.

What a pity! I was rather counting on his expertise for when I get round to my late 17th/early 18th C. project (once the Waterloo bicentennial is behind us)…
Let's hope the good Sir can be lured back after a while.

tbeard199931 Jul 2014 4:25 p.m. PST

I think that you misunderstand the "gloating and crowing".

For myself, I long ago grew tired of the overwrought "I am leaving" posts that so often include an implied "because you have allowed others to disappoint me" component. The "gloating and crowing" is, I think, more along the lines of "don't let the door hit you on the way out". And that's a perfectly reasonable response (if you assume that my interpretation is correct).

This particular poster seems particularly overwrought -- I'm not aware of "frat-boy" like bragging sessions about sexual prowess. Or perhaps the subject is sufficiently grotesque that I've blocked it out? In any case, it seems a trifle odd to invest so much drama in leaving a forum. Given the ease of lurking, it makes me suspect that they protest too much.

Weasel31 Jul 2014 4:26 p.m. PST

I might be Tbeard. You might be right.

I'm just getting very concerned about the "Them vs Us" mentality that is erupting here.

tbeard199931 Jul 2014 5:00 p.m. PST

Weasel --

If there is an "us vs them" mentality, it is being fanned by certain folks (not you as far as I can tell) who won't stop flogging the most pointless fight I think I've ever seen in a wargame forum (and believe me, that is saying something).

<RANT ON>

For BLEEP's sake, who gives a BLEEP about:

1. The sexual preferences and gender identity issues of anyone here?

2. The editor's involvement (or non-involvement) in activities that have precisely NOTHING to do with wargaming?

3. What is posted on a forum that (a) is not this forum; and (b) that prides itself on comically absurd levels of profanity and harassment of all comers.

Seriously. Who the BLEEP cares about this crap? And all the endless and pointless and idiotic questions from folks like Bandit who "just want to know"? Bandit, who cares? What does any of your incessant questioning have to do with wargaming? Why should the editor or anyone else feel obliged to answer you?

You know it's comical the way some folks here (and at Frothers) obviously (a) desperately want to harass the editor for his involvement with transgendered people, yet (b) want to be politically correct and seem soooo tolerant. Unable to reconcile these two positions, they ineffectually thrash about and pointlessly drone on about tangential (and painfully uninteresting) minutiae. I wish these idiots would either have the guts to gay-bash the editor or shut up. What they're currently doing is acting like passive-aggressive wimps.

Even the fearsome insult warriors at Frothers lack the courage to seem <gasp> intolerant. Even when it's OBVIOUS that they desperately want to find a way to *be* intolerant without being called on it. Wimps, one and all.

(A thought experiment -- what if the Editors were African-American and the Editor's charity devoted to African Americans? How long would it have taken everyone to [rightly] accuse the Editor's critics of obvious racism? My guess is about 2 hours. How much patience would everyone have with folks who incessantly imply that there's something wrong with the Editor's interest in African Americans? Ten minutes? Is there any principled reason to treat the actual situation any differently? Really?)

Finally… I beg the Editor to JUST DROP IT. You will NEVER end this ridiculous Bleeped texting contest by responding, clarifying, etc. Seriously…let it go.

<RANT OFF>

We return you to your regularly scheduled programming.

Sergeant Paper31 Jul 2014 10:39 p.m. PST

What Ty said. Stop the passive-aggressive mealy-mouthed harping at the editor. It isn't YOUR site. You aren't the boss. Bill doesn't owe you a damned thing.

Two Trek-actor quotes immediately come to mind.
Number 1, from Shatner, "Get a LIFE!"
Number 2, from Wheaton, "Don't be a dick!"

For such a niche hobby there are some intolerant narrow-minded socially-challenged lackwits and arseclowns that have stepped up to this latest crisis, thrown out their e-penii and boldly stomped ALL OVER THEMSELVES in what appears from the sidelines to be the closest thing to 'monks burning themselves to death to reproach the emperor.'

You knuckleheads who can't stop whining about Bill and his site are worse than the Empire Dude, you are worse than BME at his most coolio, you are the disease, the anti-convincers, the arseclowns, sweet mother of god, enough already.

Sergeant Paper01 Aug 2014 12:01 p.m. PST

On the plus side, going through my Ignore and Stifles I see a good dozen who I can take off the list because they got Locked.

does anyone miss him, yet?

didn't think so.

Weasel04 Aug 2014 8:55 p.m. PST

Grave dancing over a guy who isn't around to defend him or herself isn't exactly gentlemanly.

Sergeant Paper04 Aug 2014 9:40 p.m. PST

I wasn't dancing, I was venting, at every one of the posters who kept BANGING THE DRUM OVER AND OVER. Which wasn't Sir William so much but certainly was at least one of the others.

I don't see a need to crow over somebody leaving this site voluntarily, like Sir William, but I do admit to a bit of satisfaction when a real irritatin' cuss gets kicked off the island.
