What's the general opinion of them compared to the "reloaded" version? |

I've always preferred the original to the 2nd edition – while plenty of people prefer Reloaded, there seems to be at least a sizable minority of players of the same opinion as me. |

If you print them out yourself you can get kinkos to spiral bind them for you for just a few dollars. |

Why are they so good? Genuinely they are fast, simple and fun. People say that about a lot of rule sets but these are the real thing from that point of view. They just work really well. When I was first demo'd them they blew me away because of the way the game played, – nothing to do with nice figures or terrain or anything like that. It was just a really, really, good system. The booklet was (still is, probably) very basic, – no need for nice glossy pictures to sell it to you, – it was all about the rules. There really is nothing to compare them too. Later PP/RFCM products are very different. As to comparing them to "reloaded"….that's a more polished product, but is basically a completely different game. The original you could pretty much just pick up and play straight off. |

I agree with all above. Myself and a friend just finished our second game last night, he won the first I won the second. They are a very playable system. Actually both versions are good. They are two different games really and we enjoy both equally, though we tend to play Reloaded more since it is the latest version. |

You could have a dozen games with exactly the same forces and due to the political charts and deployment rules never have the same game twice. Good fun simple rules. |

What's the general opinion of them compared to the "reloaded" version? We had a poll, or at least straw poll, on it some time ago and the majority of responders preferred the original. |

I liked the abstract and off the wall nature of the earlier format. Its virtue was it gave a generic game rather than one tightly locked to real events. Usually I'd count that a disadvantage but given the kind of wars covered that it gave 'non-specific late 20th Cent. small wars' seemed entirely appropriate. I think the shooting/combat mechanism is an original idea and rather slick and the political charts were a bonus. Games took about the right length … a leisurely couple of hours or quicker if you had to get a move on … A lot of this applies to the new version too, I understand – so by noting the classic features of the original game I'm not knocking the new version (which thoroughly tackles a number of quirks that some players wanted ironed out).. Both versions, of course, look great as games Phil P.B.Eye-Candy |
