Appendix C in the book 1805: Austerlitz by Robert Goetz lists the artillery for IV Corps (Soult), 1st Division (Saint-Hilaire) as follows:

12th Company, 5th Foot Artillery, 8 guns.

However, no specifics are given.

I also found the following website:

archive.today/RpZ03

The website indicates Saint-Hilaire's division artillery as follows (if I read it correctly):

12th Company, 5th Foot Artillery (2-8pdr cannon, 2-4pdr cannon, 2-6in howitzer) plus a detachment from 16th Company, 5th Foot Artillery (2-8pdr cannon).

I'm thinking about collecting a few 18mm infantry battalions from Saint-Hilaire's division at Austerliz and I'm considering maybe adding the division artillery as listed above. But I'm not sure if this composition is correct or not.

I've read online that the Goetz book is reliable, but I don't know if I should trust the details as listed on the website shown above.

Does anybody know if this information is accurate?

Generally I have the same impression that Goetz is very accurate. The other sources I have available are:

Nafziger has the following for the IV Corps:

Division: Général de division Vandamme
Artillery:
Det/5th Foot Artillery (ll7)
? bis Train (l32)

Division: Général de division St. Hilaire
Artillery: (l20)
6-l2pdrs (?)
Train: (l08)

Division: Général de division Legrand
Artillery & Train: (220)
6pdr Artillery Company (?)

Corps Artillery:
l/, 12/, l3/, 14/, 15/, l6/, l7/ & l8/5th Foot Regiment
4/5th Horse Artillery
Det 4th Artillery Ouvriers
l/,2/,3/,4/, & 5/1st Battalion bis of Artillery Train
2/, 3/, & 4/2nd Battalion bis of Artillery Train

F.-G. Hourtoulle gives no details on the artillery, neither does the Osprey title on the battle.

Bowden gives the following:

Division: Général de division St. Hilaire
12th Company, 5th Regiment Foot Artillery – 2x 8#, 2x 4#, 2x 6" How.
Detachment of 16th Company, 5th Regiment Foot Artillery – 2x 8#
1st Battalion, Train of Artillery, 1 company
2nd Battalion of Engineers, 9th company

That's all I got!

Cheers,

That Bandit

Thanks! The website has the same artillery details as Bowden's book. I noticed the unit strengths on the website match the Bowden unit strengths as listed in the appendix of the Goetz book, but I don't have Bowden's book on Austerliz -- only the Goetz and Osprey books. Thanks again! That was a great help.

Ooh Rah, I note from your other recent post that you are contemplating using AB figures for your Austerlitz project. One area that AB is criticised for is the look of their guns. I did a review of the major makers some time ago on my blog: link

If you get in touch with me on M dot M dot Rose at Btinternet dot com I can possibly help you a little more.

@Littlearmies
I'm still at the "mulling-it-over" phase, but if I decide to include artillery in my first purchase, then it would be Saint-Hilaire's divisional artillery to go along with 1st and 2nd brigades. I would need 2-8pdr, 1-4pdr, and 1-6in plus crew. According to General de Brigade rules, one model gun represents two real guns.

But, darn, AB doesn't sell 4-pdr guns. This news is a bit disappointing.

I really like everything I've seen and read about Blue Moon. It's just that I don't want to buy a pack of 6 4-pdr (at $16.00 USD) to get the one gun I need. One of the benefits of AB is I can buy exact quantities instead of large packs containing lots of extra figures I don't need or want at this time. I realize later I may want large quantities, but for now I just want a small, manageable project that doesn't cost hundreds and hundreds of dollars. This is intended to be a "trial" to make sure I like it.

Nice review in your blog! It was very helpful for me just getting into the period. Especially liked your summary of 6-pdr guns and appropriate carriages for different time periods.

Your review indicates the AB guns are too wide. I wonder, is it possible to file each side of the axle just a tad before gluing on the wheels? Would that make the gun narrower?

@srge
Greetings to you, Joe. I must compliment you for your good nature that I've observed in your other posts. I look forward to learning more about Austerlitz, too.

Re filing the axle blocks – there is (like most model guns) a "pin" that slots into a hole inside the hub. You could cut this off and file down the axle block but I suspect this would rather weaken the joint. Of course if you permantly attach your guns to the base this wouldn't really matter.

I think as you can see from my review and the comments about it none of the guns are perfect – I did contmplate building a "frankengun" from the best bits from each maker but couldn't be bothered, to be honest.
