I've just seen the trailer for the new Hobbit film.

Sheep cavalry? Boo hoo hoo….

I know I'll like it, but as a lifelong Tolkien fan, sheep cavalry? Boo hoo

Dwarven cavalry with rams as mounts have been part of the wargaming world for a while. But you're right; it ain't Tolkien's battle.*sigh*
I'll still go, and probably enjoy the movie.
I've put up with the orc hunt, the rabbit sled, the mothagram, the stone giants, the brave Bilbo, the she-elf, the Fili (or was it Kili?) triangle, the black arrow being a ballista bolt and even the gold-fight with Smaug. I guess I can put up with warsheep. But it's getting steadily more difficult…

(Other than the non-canon sheep, it looks like a good battle.)

Why, it's the Riders of Roi-tan! Mounted on their battle-sheep.

Ve ist der merry, gay Roitaners,
Who likes der boots, salutes und banners!

Zippy, first thing I thought of too

timurilank28 Jul 2014 3:09 p.m. PST

Merino sheep and the "hobbits" were stiletto wielding pin-stripe suit wearing hooligans. LOL

RobH28 Jul 2014 3:19 p.m. PST

LOL, 25 years or so since I read that but still immediately recognised the Riders of RoiTan

"Ve is der merry, gay Roi-Tanners,
Who like der boots, salutes und banners,
Ve ride der scheeps in vind und vheather
Mit vhips und spurs und drawers of leather
Ve dance und sing und valse und two-step
Und never ever mach der goose-step.
Peace iss vhat ve vant und do have.
Und a piece of anything you have."

The whole book is online: boredoftherings.150m.com

@Nick: It's dreadful, I gave up even trying to make the Jackson films relate to the original story. Just ignore the name and look at it as a generic fantasy story and it is not too bad….apart from the rabbit sled…..that is just crap.

Really? I kinda liked the upgrades to the story actually. Never did believe that Thorin and Co would never have won back the mountain without so much as a fight with the Dragon in the first place.

And the Elf girl is a really nice edition since JRR was always light on female characters. And other then the Elf Queen is probably the only other main female character in this one.

Sometimes a story needs a bit of help to make a better movie then it does a book.

I checked several times and I guess I didnt see the sheep. I saw mounted Ram riders which looked cool.

Those were more like rams than sheep.

NickNorthStar28 Jul 2014 6:27 p.m. PST

My copy of Bored has an apology to a certain living author, thats how old it is.

legatushedlius29 Jul 2014 5:19 a.m. PST

Aren't they some sort of Ibex, therefore goats?

Those were more like rams than sheep.

Y'all know that rams are male sheep, right?

NickNorthStar29 Jul 2014 6:06 a.m. PST

I thought sheep cavalry sounded more pathetic than goat cavalry, but yes, I think they are goats. 'Course the mighty Thor careered around the universe in a goat chariot.

Ibex: link
Rams (sheep): link

The ones in the film somewhat resemble Norfolk Horn Sheep:

Actually, there are some pretty awesome horned rams out there. Check out these baaaad boys:

Yep, don't discount goats. They just as soon eat the clothes you're wearing as look at you! :)

All that aside, how makes LOTR compatible Dwarven Sheep cavalry? Lost Pict
