Hi all, here is the first base of archers for my mediaval army. They are based on a 100 x 80 mm plastic base, so there is space enough for a lot of figures and some scenery. And that's what is the most impressive thing with 6mm: You have a real army and not just 5 to 20 men to represent a unit.
the whole unit

dead horseman baccus has a lot of very nice figures to build great mediaval or Fantasy armies. These archers are from the War of-the-Roses-range. I hope you get some inspiration, and feel free to comment. Michael butternut2011.blogspot.de |

Very nice, but not really an army :p 40 minis are not that more many than 20, and some 28mm people have units of 40,60 and 100 :p Now have 500 minis per base and we are talking about a real army. |

Like this? (Okay, this battalion only has 288 figures, but still…)

It's just one unit, put a bunch of bases like that together and you will have the look of a real army. 6mm can be used to make more life sized units on a smaller foot print than other scales. Don't misunderstand, I like the look of larger figures, but 6mm used in numbers do give a look of an "army" better than their bigger brethern. |

Really like the basing you've used, particularly the bare ground and the transition to grass – and the arrows in the dead guy are a great touch! |

Good Extra Crispy! Now that is the spirit. A couple of those and you can do a good job representing a real brigade. If you are going the 6mm route it makes little sense for me to just use double the figures people use in 28mm (40 mini battalion instead of say 20 mini battalions). I tried it with Impetus and Baccus Napoleonic Rules, and it did not work for me. If you are going to 6mm you should strive to use much more miniatures. I dare say , being a fanatic in the belief that the best unit scale to represent in wargaming is the brigade/battle/wing action that you should try to create such units as close as possible to scale (1 to 5). Again the OPs stuff is exemplary but an army it is still not. A warband yes! |

OP talked about "first base if archers for my medieval army", so why all the carping about "one base is not an army". I would imagine he will have twenty or more of these bases, then it will be an army and the carpers above should eat their words. On a positive note, it's a really nice piece of work from Michl Mauser. Be good to see the whole army when it's done. |

Thanks for all your comments. @steamingdave47: Because of being a slow painter (or better: slow baser) it will need some time to show you the whole army (by the way: I think my armies will never be finished because of a lot of stuff that I like to add…) @boy wundyr x: Thank you for the comment concerning the base. My first bases were allways too green or too brown, but with the basing system from baccus and some inspiration from you other wargamers now it is looking a bit better. Using dead or wounded or "unusual" figures is allways fun and gives a personal touch. @lloydthegamer: I also like larger figures, but 6mm are just the best for me. And if you are doing games with vehicules it's also a good balance between size of men, vehicules and ground. If you like to play with a lot of tanks and planes it's better to go down to 3mm or even smaller. @Extra Crispy: That's a battalion! I like your work, seen it before somewhere else. It's not just two or four men with a red, yellow or blue plume to represent a company. @KTravlos: Thanks for your comment, and you are right, it's not an army, it's a unit of 48 men. Fact is: You can't bring a real army on a table, you can't fire, march, drive, fly or ride on real distances. And of course people doing wargames in 15mm or 28mm have units of 40,60 and 100 if they like it. For me 6mm is the size I can handle with, perhaps not as good as much others do, but it's a personal thing what you like and what not. So guys, thanks again to all. I will do my best to show you more of my units, warband, army or just my hobby.

Michael I want to be clear that I still think you are doing a great job. Just pushing you a bit more. Actually I was thinking why do we try to represent full armies on the field? Frankly commanders very rarely before the modern era controlled their full armies. They laid a plan before battle and decided were the reserve will strike, but lets be frank, the real key was the battles of contingents: Medieval Battaile, Wings, Brigades etc. I think representing the relative foot print of the Van, or Middle or Left or Right maybe doable. |
