The term animal killer appears to have its origin at the battle of Ponyri near kursk where russian 1442nd SP Art Regiment engaged ferdinands of 653 heavy panzerjager battalion. There seems to be some debate on the armament of this regiment. I believe they were armed with isu 152s. Major Sankovsky was a SU-152 battery commander of the 1442nd SP Artillery Regiment assigned to the 13th Army. His battery was supporting the 307th Rifle Division around the village of Ponyri Station during the Battle of Kursk in July 1943. On July 7th, it is believed that Major Sankovsky knocked out 10 enemy tanks all in one day. During the next three weeks of combat at Kursk, his battery accounted for 12 Tigers and 7 Ferdinands. There is no mention of the tank types destroyed so the 10 tanks could have been anything from a Goliath to a Tiger. It could also be interpreted that it was Sankovsky's whole battery which destroyed those 10 enemy tanks in a day.
