Man putting these guys together is getting old quick. I usually prime my plastics with spray primer while still on the sprew. I tried painting one unit before assembly and one after. Still very frustrating and I still have two boxes (four units)to go. I'm having a hard time finding the patience to go back and touch up paint all the areas that flaked. The swear jar has filed to the point that I could afford metal figures. Has anyone had any luck with this kit? Any posted pictures would serve as incentive to finish. |

Hey davbenbak, Here are some Zvezda Greek and Persians that I did a few years ago. I suggest assembling first then coating the figs in PVA before priming. link

Agreed. PVA before painting and PVA after painting sandwiches your paint in 2 layers of flexible and tough coats. I have bent plastic pikes over 90 degrees without paint flaking after a PVA sandwich. |

Nice figures, D6 Junkie … Phil |

I found the pikes just too long and thin on these figs to stay straight or hold paint, despite all the tricks (I assembled first and used rustoleum plastic primer). Also quite difficult to use for gaming since many are in charging position. Too bad since their sculpting is good. I found the Hat phalangists to work better for gaming in terms of poses and you provide your own pikes for these. |

Thanks for posting the pics. I have boxes of their Greeks and Spartans as well and found them much easier to assemble with the exception of one broken spear as I attempted to get it through the ring hand. I'll post pictures of any progress I make this weekend. |

Actually you got me motivated to paint up some of my Persian Cav! thanks |

OK, let me see if I can figure out how to post my pics. I finally got fed up and just based them without a wash or highlights. Just a quick flocking. Can't get the link to work. How did you do it? |

Here are my "Bronze Shields" if this picture works. I usually mount mass close order formations like hoplite and pike phalanxes on a 40mm X 40mm base instead for the 40mm X 20mm I use for other infantry units. To compensate for the lowered pikes I do two rows on a 40mm X 80mm base, so two in one. |

And here are my "Silver Shields" As noted no wash or highlights. I might not even get around to any detail on the shields. I am so feed-up with this bastards and I still have two units primed and ready to go on my work desk. As beautiful as these figures appear on plasticsoldierreview.com I would still recommend to anyone getting the Hat set. The lack of detail is not such a big thing when they are set in mass. |

Long bendy pikes might be best replaced with wire but for the figures themselves: wash in warm soapy water, dry, seal with varnish then undercoat and paint as normal, give em another coat of varnish when you finish. Works a treat for me on WW2 plastics and gives some support to the bendy bits that tend to flake quickest. |

Sorry maybe I should have been more specific when I said "no wash". I meant no ink wash over painted figures. I always wash in hot soapy water using Dawn detergent, then scrub with a toothbrush. I also soak in vinegar for a few hours, dry then paint with black Krylon spray paint before actually painting. I have read a lot about people using a PVA glue solution. Is there a recipe or do you just eye ball it? |

Brass wire works pretty well for me. I do rather like the detail on the Zvezdas, although the HaT set is much more practical. With the Zvezdas, it is far better to simply cut the pike off altogether and drill through the hands to admit the wire. What I do is have the right-most section of my sarissa units Zvezda, and have the others HaT. |
