Can anyone enlighten me on the colours or patterns that French Army trucks were painted in 1940? Were they one colour, or painted in disruptive patterns?

See if you can get a copy of L'Autombile Sous L'Uniforme 1939-40 by Francois Vauvillier… lots of color plates of French soft skin vehicles.

I just paint mine olive.

Etranger25 Jul 2014 6:10 a.m. PST

They were mostly just painted 'Army Green'.

What kind of truck? Like most armies, ones that are near the front lines, like artillery tractors or Dragons Portee infantry carriers would have disruptive camo. Supply echelon trucks in rear areas would be army green, as Etranger notes. This is of course, a rule of thumb.

Green is usually a safe bet:)

Renault AHN and AHS?

They were large trucks (3 tonnes or thereabouts) so not often used in a tactical role. Here are some pix though: link The Germans put cammo on a lot of theirs

H'mmm. No schemes that would pass for both German AND French?

MGKmilsims06 Aug 2014 2:33 p.m. PST

All French trucks were to be painted in disruptive patterns. Some of them were very elaborate. A few examples:

A fine marker pen comes in very handy for the outlines.

Enjoy

each frenc constructor has his own camouflage scheme, on an olive green base .

Renault use large brown parts over olive green :

then, there were a lot of variations , unit specific camo scheme, civilian requisitionned vehicles, …

but mostly, the vehicles remain in the constructor camo .

the only exception is vehicles ( of any kind ) for saharian and sub-saharian erea, in some kind of "sand" color .

yes i agree with War in 15 mm , L'automobile sous l'uniforme is the holy grail of the french véhicles .
