If you're unsure of the date, book a room for every July weekend and cancel the ones you don't need later.

As to cancelling, not sure about the other two hotels there but the Homewood Suites required both a 3 night stay AND a non-refundable deposit of one nights stay for 2015 reservations! So keep that in mind if on the fence

Bumbydad26 Jul 2014 7:38 p.m. PST

And PLEASE do not make reservations you do not intend to honor. Homewood Suites has had a serious problem with this, as it appears they are booked up, when in fact many of the reservation-ers cancel without warning.

Just my 2p and a minor gripe…

I tried multiple times to get into Homeward suites during 2013 and no response from them to my e-mails.

I had filled in a reservation request form and they did not contact me, so I presume they did not have any problems with people dropping out as I was never contacted, or perhaps their process failed?

If they are requesting Non Refundable deposits I hope they allow reservations to be transferred?

Do the other two hotels there require a non-refundable deposit or is only Homewood?

From the point of view of being a regular game master the Homewood is the best option because of the ease of transport to the convention center with all of the stuff. However, it does appear they are a bit slack on the early reservation deal. I recommend calling and making your reservation on the phone instead of booking online.

Hampton has the same policy as the Homewood. Both these hotels have the same management company and same general manager. FHH does not require a deposit. HGI has not decided yet. This year HGI had a min 4 nite stay AND raised prices once the block sold out.

All 3 on site hotels had senior management turnover since 2013. Of the people I worked with last year only one was still there for this year.

We stayed at the Fredericksburg Hospitality House (FHH) and will be going back, primarily because it IS a mile from the FCC. This means we can spin right by some pretty decent eateries on our way in (Cracker Barrel, etc), and also on our way back. For lunch there is Wegmans. Using this scenario, from Wednesday to Sunday I had convention center food once, because I was in the middle of GMing a game.

Staying at the Homewood, et al, I found myself settling for convention food as a matter of convenience; it was right there with no driving needed. It was also over priced and not nearly as good as the Sunrise Sampler from Cracker Barrel. Besides, I tell my family to load me up on gift cards from places like this when birthdays, Fathers Days and the like comes around, so I think I actually got a system going on here.

Ciao, Colonel Bill

Hilton Garden Inn is in fact taking reservations.

Be sure to read the fine print on deposit and refund and the timing of same.

I stay at The Hilton Garden Inn. The walk isn't bad (some of the rooms on the far end of the Host are further from the Distlestink than my walk to FCC). The painting crew makes it a point to leave the FCC for dinner each day and I eat a good breakfast in the am at the Hilton and then take some fruit for a snack. I found one place in the FCC that made a decent deli sandwich, so I had that for lunch loaded up with all the veggies they had. However, I would make your reservations early. I was fortunate to get into the Hilton this year as I had a brain fart and forgot to make my reservations for 2014.
