17 battalions of infantry, 2 units of cavalry, numbers artillery pieces, command groups and unique vignettes. Send PM for details of the collection… no time wasters please.

Wouldn't think of it.

This add should be in the market place!

If you want to avoid time wasters, then you should include a few particulars about the collection, such as the figures used, where and how you will ship it, and maybe a general idea of what you are looking for in cost. Too often I have been interested in something for sale on this page, contacted the person selling it, only to find that the price was far more than what I imagined it would be.
Don't get me wrong, Peter Gilder did wonderful work, both in sculpting and painting of miniatures, but the figures he would have used, not counting his Connoisseur range, are most likely smaller than most figures used today.

I'm guessing that "FS" means For Sale?

Tarleton25 Jul 2014 3:34 a.m. PST

Great for the time but sadly dated and indeed to an extent crude when compared to what is currently available.

Would only appeal to a collector of "names" I think.

Gilder did the Hinchliffe minis, I believe? They were tops for their time and are still nice; I have a lot in my armies. But certainly not as fine as what is being produced today.

Calvados, you've restricted your market here on TMP to only supporting members, you realize? Since only they can PM you. I think current photos of the figures current condition are essential to making this sale. Especially since Mr. Gilder has been gone for nearly thirty years. Though I'm glad to see you've possessed them, I have fond memories of many of your articles in WI – even though most were in periods I don't choose to game they were still wonderful to behold.

"No time wasters" -very endearing…

If this is the same collection by Peter Gilder pictured in the book, "Battles of the American Revolution" by Curt Johnson (RAND McNALLY), then it is indeed a treasure of the modern wargaming world.

My copy is dated 1975. The color photos of Peter Gilder's painted figures used to illustrate the battles from Lexington to Yorktown in this book got me started in AWI gaming and collecting.

I only wish I were in a position to purchase this collection. I would love to see it come to the U.S.A., and reside permanently in a prominent venue such as Mount Vernon, Colonial Williamsburg, or the Yorktown Battlefield.

Sorry – didn't realise about the PM thing (or the marketplace restriction) but happy to share a pdf of the collection if anyone emails me at valiantminiatures@btinternet.com. Here's a couple of pics for anyone that's curious.

The initial post was somewhat abrupt but soon as I read that I knew the collection being referred to was practically a national treasure to us old Peter Gilder fans :-) Wonderful images, they deserve a very good home.

Can't afford them and don't need them but they are lovely, and should be in a museum, for certain.

Early morning writer27 Jul 2014 7:38 a.m. PST

Thanks, Calvados. And I think Mr. Gilder would shudder in his grave at the idea of these being in a museum. I rather like the idea of seeing them in play.

I can't afford them either and they are the wrong scale for my collection but I'm sure they will sell – especially to someone who appreciates who he was.

And for those of you who never knew who he was or are just too young, he was one of the giants of the hobby, not quite in the ranks of Jack Scruby or Don Featherstone (Field Marshals at least) but near the top of the very next rank.

I had the book! Still might somewhere! Loved it as a kid! I still have a few of these figures unpainted floating around somewhere.

That book was very inspirational for many years ago.

dBerczerk27 Jul 2014 12:40 p.m. PST

Somehow I cannot imagine Mr. Gilder minding in the least seeing busloads of school children streaming through the Visitor's Center, Yorktown Battlefield, gazing in awe at his collection of figures in a diorama proudly recreating the siege of Yorktown, or any of the other battles portrayed in Curt Johnson's book on the American Revolution.

Who knows, his collection might live on to inspire yet another young person to understand the value of studying history, and the joys of tabletop miniature wargaming.

I just dug mine out from storage. I should paint them up…
