The only thing that keeps me from wargaming in 6mm is the basic question of how to base the figures so that they can operate in both column or line formation (horse and musket period). I see lots of beautiful lines of battle, but never a column traveling on a road. Is this done in 6mm? I don't see how you can void it, but I also can't see how a unit of a dozen or more figures in line can be used to simulate a column. |

I do it the same way you would in larger scales. My 30 figure AWI battalions are based 6 figures in 3x2 formation on 5 bases. Line them up beside each for line, behind each other for column. |

6mm. Do the unit twice. Once in line, the second in column. |

I base my troops on 20x20 steel stands. Then I use magnetic movement stands for the units. For column, rearrange the stands and you get a very nice looking formation. A battalion in line, wide angle. The column looks pretty much the same but with the flag at the end

I use 40x20mm bases and Baccus miniatures. 4 miniatures strips per base.
3 bases to a unit. (2 "troops" bases and 1 "command" base) I find it is very easy to form the units into lines or column with that configuration. |

How you base is up to you. A popular basing method in the 6mm world is to have each base represent a unit. These bases are often 60x30mm in size. The advantage of doing it this way is that each base can be made into a mini-diorama. The drawback, of course, is that formations cannot be changed! Another way is to use whatever basing scheme you use for 15mm or 28mm and just fill the base with 6mm figures. Big units always look cool! Personally I use several 40x20mm bases per unit because I like to represent different formations during a game. Each to their own… |

Put 'em end-on, on the road, for road column. If your rules call for other formations, then you'll need multi-stand units, anyway, regardless of scale--and those you can put in shapes. |

I use multi-stand units – I use the Age of Eagles rules and use the stand size for 15mm, just with a lot more figures on them |
