I'll preface by saying that we are all entitled to charge what we will, or to pay what we will, for the things that we find attractive or special. However, I think the auctions that I linked to below are a prime example of "auction fever" at its worst. Simple setup: A seller lists two rather large lots of Conté mixed plastic Vikings and Normans, no boxes or packaging, varying numbers of each pose. The seller starts them off at a reasonable open, several folks start the bidding early (as in 4-5 days early), and then apparently two folks get into a bidding frenzy over them. The net result is that the "winner" of both auctions (same person) paid over $5 USD per figure for one lot of 87 figures, and $2.60 USD a figure for a lot of 48. The net cost per figure for both sets together (135 figs @ $567.50 USD) is $4.20 USD a figure. Now, as I said at the outset, we all have the right to charge or pay whatever we want or the market will bare. However, while it is true that these are all technically OoP at the moment, somehow Conté himself keeps coming up with sets for his Beau Geste Collectibles store that you can buy for around $20 USD a set of 14. I know because I just bought three sets from him, off eBay right before these! What am I missing here? I bookmarked the listings and I'll be curious to see if the bidder comes through on the purchase. The one large lot would have required an auto-bid of at least $500 USD to generate the bids that it did. Simply daft in my mind… auction auction Bill Sir William the Aged |

Wow. I have a lot of these to go with my Conte Warlord tower. I must be sitting on a fortune. :-) Matthew |

OK, now one of the 2 guys from the earlier auctions just jumped all over a small lot of 30 that I had pretty well wrapped up. In the last hour he went back and forth with another guy and bid the lot up from $45 USD to $76 USD and (I think) had it padded beyond that. If I didn't need the Conté figures that I already have, I'd be listing them right now! The thing that's crazy, is that there is still a standard group of 16 from Michigan Toy Soldier with a Buy-It-Now of $20 USD for the set?!? What am I missing here? Do the other groupings come with magic beans or something and I just don't know the code? Bill Sir William the Aged |
