I have a pretty good collection of ACW books, but over the last two or three years I've been concentrating on other periods. Just recently I've had a hankering to do some more Civil War gaming and reading but haven't concentrated on whats been published during my hiatus. So what I would like are some recommendations please! Books on any aspect of the war, general, campaigns, battles, personalities, etc. But books that have been published in the last two or three years, and most importantly, books you've thoroughly enjoyed reading. Thanks! |

Have you read David G. Martin's "Gettysburg July 1"? It has been out for a long while, with a revised edition about a decade ago, but I am surprised as to how many "civil war buffs" an amateur historians have missed it. It is a different read than Pfanz's book "Gettysburg – The First Day." |

I have, thanks Justin. It's just the original version, but it was a very good read. |

Shiloh 1862 by the writer of Forrest Gump is a good history of the battle. If you want historical fiction then the michael shaara is doing some work on the later part of the war in the west. Still not as good as his father but much better then his earlier works. |

Even though it has been in print since 2005, I just finished reading "Nothing but Victory …" by Steven E. Woodworth. 700+ pages, but I still could not put it down. Great for the Western Theater of Operations. |

Ed Bearrs has finished his two volume history of the Siege of Petersburg. Also of interest is James McPherson's "The War on the Waters", a naval history of the war. I'd also recommend "Flames Beyond Gettysburg" by Scott Mingus. Also "The Civil War in the West" from Earl Hess. And if you haven't read them Gordon Rhea's books on the Overland Campaign. And while they have been out for quite a while most have never read Joseph Harsh's "Confederate Tide Rising" and "Taken at the Flood", his studies of Lee's command decisions from the Seven Days through Antietam. |

I just finished Scott Patchan's The Last Battle of Winchester. An excellent book on a battle I knew practically nothing about. |
