Does anyone have a tried and true recipe to painting wooden crates and barrels? This seemingly easy task has given me troubles for a long time. I usually start with a darker brown color, such as Earth or German Camo Medium Brown, Brown Ink it and then add Bonewhite to the base color a few times, but it just never looks right. I recently bought the Old Wood and New Wood from Panzer Aces, and even with an inking and drybrush it still doesn't look right. Any suggestions as to colors, washes, inks and whether you use drybrushing or something else? |

If they have been exposed to the elements for much time, they will look better if you use grey. I don't remember the exact colour I used but I had a grey base, gave a thin brown wash and then highlighted with lighter grey. |

My current method is to use a base colour similar to GW Calthan Brown followed by a 'strong tone' wash then a dry brush with a a lightish/medium grey similar to GW Fortress grey. They look good to me :-) Paul – Paul's Modelling Workshop |

Allow it to "dry overnight" between steps. |

Good tips on wood, but here's what I do on the iron parts. Paint the straps or bands black and then take a number 2 pencil and rub it on the black. Use a soft cloth and wipe the bands or straps until the cloth is clean. Gives a very good impression of metal straps. |

Yeah, what Swampster said. Wood (unvarnished) goes grey pretty quickly when exposed to the elements. Just look at some pictures on Google. It's like the old thing about painting tree trunks brown when they are anything but brown. Other things that are frequently NOT the colour you think they are… Thatched roof – not yellow, warm grey Grass (other than short cropped lawns) – not green, pale straw Tarmac – not black, neutral mid-grey |
