I need to buy material to cover my makeshift game table. I've heard that felt can get fuzzy and/or picky over time. I remember seeing a post that mentioned flannel as a better cover.

Any opinions/thoughts welcomed!

Pete

For the base covering I wouldn't use either. Just dye an old sheet green.

I've never heard of using flannel to cover a game table. I've been using felt for some twenty years. The same piece, by the way. I've had very few problems.
But I'd like to hear from others about this flannel idea…

Felt or a suitable dyed sheet.

There are different grades of felt and it can 'bobble'. i.e. not all felts are made equally!

There are different grades of felt

How can you distinguish the different grades? I've only ever seen "felt" – it all seems to be the same rather than there being a choice of grades.

Go to the fabric store. Wander. Look at Felt, Fleece and others. Some felt will snag (my first sea mat snagged like crazy), some is very smooth.

Touching is believing. Also, felt is like a gremlin – you don't want to get it wet.

I use a green sheet.

I found a tablecloth on sale and used it. Also I agree with going into a fabric store. I stumbled upon some really nice fake fur for fields . It was on sale too. They always have stuff on sale.

Actually baby flannel is one of the best materials to use. The trick is finding the appropriate color, as the stores all to often only carry the print stuff. I ended up ordering mine direct from one of the distributors years ago. It was cheaper, and I was able to order in the width needed to cover the game table (80" width)!! It's held up very nicely over the years of use!!!

Also check out the T-shirt material in the fabric section – usually polyester/cotton mix about 4 feet (120cm) wide, stretchy (so you can drape it over piles of books and the like to make hills if you can't carry separate hills), doesn't really crease permanently and comes in a wide variety of colors (and takes spray paint readily for shading). So you could have a grass green, Martian desert red and blue water Navy as well as a star field black.

There is a gamer who makes incredible 6mm terrain boards using t-shirt material that he then paints and textures. Wonderful effects.

Thanks for all the responses – off to the fabric store!

I have a piece of black denim that I use for my city fights. You may be able to find that in green as well.
