Hello, I have a quick question for everyone out there. How willing are you to purchase from an online store that only accepts paypal as a method of payment? Thank you, Michael |
Bill McHarg | 23 Jul 2014 11:37 a.m. PST |
Its the only way I pay for purchases online now, so its not a problem. |
redmist1122 | 23 Jul 2014 11:47 a.m. PST |
PayPal only…not a fan. I would go out of my way to find another distributer if they took credi cards instead. But will make the sacrifice to load moneies into my PayPal account to buy something. To me it's a matter of convience to have either option, and not one. Good luck! P. |

After a couple of issues with ID theft originating in mom and pop online stores I would rather use Paypal than have to register for an account and give my credit card info. But if its something I really want my discretion puts up a weak fight. |

Using a credit card (on the receiving end, I mean) seems to be difficult. Since many manufacturers are in fact solo operators they do not want to take that trouble. Personally I prefer PayPal because I can see immediately what happens. Paying through credit card means logging in at my bank, so I have to walk two stairs down to get the appropriate information (and, of course, back again). My work space is in the attic. |

Not a problem, you don't HAVE to open a paypal account to pay through it. You can just use a guest account and pay with a credit card like normal. |

I try to avoid PayPal if I can--just being able to use my credit card without registering it with them works fine for me though. |

I take paypal as a rule, still accept check and MO's, but the times that I have had to are very few and far between. |

As someone who ran an online business I can tell you that credit cards are a pain. First of all they have fixed fees per month no matter how much you put through. Secondly, depending on the store software you use, they can be difficult to integrate into your site. That being said, I would still do it unless it was a really small business. Personally, PayPal only is fine with me, but I would use a credit card if given the choice. Steve |

MajorB; Although I generally try to avoid PayPal unless there is no other option, I am curios, what are the security reasons that concern you? Any computer system handling financial transactions should have a minumum level of security. In practice that means two-factor authentication. PayPal does have a two-factor authentication option (but note it is ONLY an option, it's use is not enforced). Unfortunately, there is a flaw in PayPal's two-factor authentication system: link PayPal is owned by eBay. Earlier this year eBay, informed customers of a massive privacy breach, announcing on 21 May that it had been subject to an attack that compromised a database holding non-financial data… |

Paypal is good for me. Apart from anything else it offers a quick line of action if you pay for something that doesn't show up after a reasonable amount of time. |

I'm payment agnostic, I'll use paypal or credit card. BUT if you want me to sign up for an account at your site, I'll just go somewhere else. |

Thank you all for the great responses. I am considering building a site to get away from ebay and was wondering if credit cards would be worth the fees. Thanks! Michael |

Paypal's my preferred option, although cheques and debit cards are fine too. I like to tell myself I won't ever sign up for an account with a company, but at times something nice wears down my resolve… |

Credit Cards are much cheaper than Paypal. I pay 1.9% for a CC but close to 5 for Paypal. |

Will not shop with a vendor that only uses PayPal – I don't use it and have no intention of adding it – Credit, Checks and Cash. When I sell on ebay – a rarity these days – I do not use PayPal as an option. Maybe I am limiting myself – but my preference |

I've had problems with giving CC's to European vendors where all of a sudden things were being bought on my card in Paris or some other place. Since then it is PayPal, even though I do not like their charges. I use it for my business as well. |
Fonzie | 23 Jul 2014 5:40 p.m. PST |
You can pay with a credit card trough PayPal without having to have a PayPal account. So there is no need for the vendor to have expensive CC processing terminals and no need to get the customer's CC number etc. The customers do not need to have a PayPal account yet their transaction is processed securely by PayPal. I have been accepting CC's through PayPal like this for over a year now and had zero problems. Fons mmps.asia |

Is it not common knowledge that you can pay with a cc through paypal? I'm not trying to be sarcastic, but this comes up once in a while… |
GildasFacit | 24 Jul 2014 2:52 a.m. PST |
Credit cards are only cheaper than PayPal here in the UK if you do a lot more business monthly that I do. At my current level of activity (which is admittedly down a fair bit at present) the total fees for all income via CC instead of PayPal would be a little over 12%. PayPal is about 4%. For small dealers PayPal is about the only reasonable solution. Banks in the UK no longer guarantee cheques so that is unsafe and money orders (postal orders in the UK) have a fee of around 10%. PayPal is thus a no-brainer unless you take a serious amount of cash per month, which many small wargames businesses don't. Everyone is entitled to their own little quirks on modern life (I hate mobile phones) but PayPal seems a fairly safe bet to me. |

Paypal preferably backed by a credit card. that way if someone gets access to your paypal details they are only stealing from the credit card company. |
Delta Vee | 24 Jul 2014 6:09 a.m. PST |
I don't and wont use paypal, I have personal experience of a credit card being compromised after a paypal purchase ( not a paypal account but where it acts as a monetary handler). This applies even to company's who I know and trust, having dealt with them numerous time before, either face to face, by mail order, or by phone. I can understand to cost to a small business, and can sympathise but after getting caught once, and the subsequent story's regarding security make me unwilling to risk using it further. |

I just looked at sales from the last two months, 75% used PayPal, and 25% just used their credit card without PayPal. I am not sure, if those 25% would have used PayPal or not if that was all I had available, but then again they might. Just not sure I want to take a chance with a 25% drop in sales. With us, and I believe this to be always the case that all credit card sales are completed on a secure site owned by the bank/credit card company called a gateway. When you make a purchase, you leave the shopping cart to the gateway just like paying through PayPal. There is no reason to require anyone to register for an account except to allow the storeowner to have a record of customer information for advertising or whatever. But registering can make later purchases easier for the customer so they don't have to type all that information in again and again. As a small storeowner I do not have credit card details on file unless I use the old "knuckle buster" slide credit card reader that uses carbon paper to make copies at a shows. I would think most vendors no longer use those because of smartphones. I have registering as an option and after nearly 10 years in business, I've done anything with the information. Though, I would like to do a newsletter after we get our new shopping cart up and running. Our new cart allows customers to subscribe to the a newsletter. Mark I need to contact you for information about your credit card option. I pay too much for mine. Lol Duane Syrhobbswargames.com |

Years ago, I sold a rules set via mail, and PayPal on my web site. A customer e-mailed me asking questions about his CC payment… I knew he made a payment because PayPal credited my account with his funds. I never knew he used his CC until he asked me about it. He thought it had been compromised, and he wanted to know what I had for information, and how had I used it? I told him I received his money, but I had no idea he had used his CC -- if PayPal had compromised his information, he needed to take it up with them. I posted his product, and I never heard from him again. I've been a PayPal user since around 2000? I've never had an issue with them. I once had to ask them to recover my funds for an e-Bay auction, years before e-Bay purchased the PayPal company, and all went smoothly, without issue. I live in the USA, so I cannot speak to the risks for those outside of this country. I did, however, receive some overseas orders, which I filled, without issue. Like I said, PayPal has always worked for me, over the past 14, or more, years. YMMV. Cheers! |
