I'm in the process of putting together a Successors/Pontic force in 25/28mm and I have 2 of the RAFM scythed chariots, which I purchased about 20 years ago.

They're typical RAFM Historical 'chunky 25mm' size and nice little models at a good price – but only 2 horses per chariot… How badly inaccurate is that?

I know every other scythed chariot I've seen has 4 horses…is there any evidence that some might actually have had 2 horses, or was the RAFM sculptor just quirky?

More importantly, will my force be cruelly mocked by other successor enthusiasts for having inadequate scythed death machines?

Advice would be appreciated.

Not only will they mock you but their horses will be larger too.

Well I would not worry about it as the chariot is only a symbol on the base and its the base that is important because every bit of the base fights whether a model is on that bit or not.
Its likely that scythed chariots had four horses because they developed from four horse chariots which were found to be inadequate to break infantry formations which had presumably stiffened up to deal with them.
I recall the story is in Xenophon's Cyropaedia, which is not history as such, but is a collection if stories from the time and he was living at the time scythed chariots were used.

You could take the horse team off one of the models to make one 4 horse team….. and turn the other one into a wrecked chariot model mini diorama for when the inevitable happens. evil grin

RAFM is still making those models. Why not email them and ask if you can get additional horses?
I bet it will not be their first request.

Certainly I've often done that with Garrison.

I think I'll see what RAFM says about additional horses and take it from there. If they won't supply any I'll probably go with Tarantella's idea and convert one into a wreck – I looked up Lewisgunner's Xenophon angle and old Xeno definitely mentions 1200 horses to equip 300 chariots…

Thanks for the responses so far everyone, they've been helpful.

Indeed, he served in an army that included them and fought against an army that sent them charging at him.
