Howdy,

Shown below are photos from the game. Far from a decisive attack the Germans will remember the action for the great traffic jam, as two divisions marched into each other. For the Russians the heroic stand of 11th Company in the RR shanty town east of Gumbinnen will be forever immortalized.

The game was played with 15mm Peter Pig figures using Command Decision Test of Battle. The bathtubbed battle covered the northern and central sectors of the historical battle. There were three victory conditions for the game:

(1) Terrain – the Germans were to threaten the Russian lines of supply. Not achieved. Point for Russians.

(2) Casualties – German losses were heavier than the Russians. Point for Russians.

(3) Material – Destroy or capture guns – The Germans knocked out a Russian battery. Point for Germans.

Overall, 2 to 1, Russian victory.

First a few photos showing terrain:

Photo 1 - Looking north Hill 121 toward Gumbinnen

Photo 2 - Also looking north, Stalluponen on the right, shanty town on the left.

Photo 3 - Initial skirmishing east of Gumbinnen, shanty town on the left (photographer obviously a bit shaky as the initial shots were fired).

Photo 4 - Amongst the Russians

Now, several shots with an overview of the battle:

Photo 5 - Looking to the southeast

Photo 6 - Northern sector, looking east

Photo 7 - View looking east

It was a fun game. The eight players all seemed to enjoy the game.

Ponder on,

JAS

I enjoyed this at Cold Wars glad you ran it again. It was a fun game. One that feels it can go either way.

Thanks Winston, glad you enjoyed the game. That's why we play – it's fun.

I hope you are describing the play-balance of the game, in your comment, "one that feels it can go either way."
