Was the term "Tonkin Gulf Aero Club" ever used during the war, and by the Navy? I first saw the "Tonkin Gulf Aero Club" patch in O'Connor's "MiG Killers of Yankee Station", but I tried to look it up on the web and what I'm reading is that it was a post war patch made for the USAF, which makes little sense, why would the USAF even try to mimic the "Yacht Club"? Anyone know? |

Confusingly, there seem to be a couple of variants:
It is listed on Ebay as "Vietnam War Novelty Patch US Navy TONKIN GULF AERO CLUB" but also as "Vintage original Vietnam war in-country machine-embroidered patch" According to this website: link "…The Tonkin Gulf Aero Club was a nickname for Navy aircraft that flew from from [sic] Yankee and Dixie Station. The Republic of Vietnam's flag is depicted in the background…" |
