For you terrain builders….how wide should roads and rivers be in 15mm gaming?

Thanks

Depends on your ground scale. If you are playing a skirmish game then a road should be about 30-40mm wide for each lane. If OTOH you are playing a unit based game then you can use much narrower roads. Most of my roads for use with 15mm figures are 20mm wide.

What MajorB said, as I usually use 1"=50m with 15mm stuff (except when I don't), then 1" wide is plenty.

Wide enough so that the largest individual base size can fit on it.
Ground scale and figure scale never match up with miniature wargaming.
I would say if your standard infantry base is 1-1/4" wide, then make your roads 1-1/2".

seriously

As for rivers, all rivers are different.

Your main goal in miniature gaming is too look good. A "model" road's main function is to give the troops a path to walk only hopefully fster than plain terrain. You do not want to have a perfectly scaled road and have your bases overlaping the edges.

I like roads (and bridges) to be wide enough for a vehicle to fit on so about 40 -50 mm wide for my 15 mm stuff. Modern Tarmac main roads should be a bit wider so 2 vehicles can pass

"Depends on your ground scale…"

That's the nub.

I settled on approximately 1" roads for my ACW. My stands are 1" as well. This is all with a 1"=100yd ground scale. Actual scale roads just didn't look right. I make my own roads so now I have some 15mm paths too!

For my designed I used 3cm per lane, as thought that was about right for realistic roads.
With the current trend for wider miniatures I might be dong some wider road sections.

Mine are 40mm wide. That way, when playing ancients (using figures based on 40mm bases), a column can walk on a road. Also, when playing FOW, a tank can fit on the road as well.

Someone has to be a jerk and say it.

How wide should 15mm roads be? 15mm :-)
OK my last act as an ass for the day.
