Hello, all, I'll be spending a few days in St. Louis, Missouri, in mid August (hot, I realize). I'll be visiting family there, who are good guides for the "usual" things (the Arch, the zoo, etc)--perfectly fine. However, they also asked if there were anything that I was interested in seeing or doing. So… …any advice on military/historical points of interest in the area? Any era will do. Best, Ed M |

There is Jefferson Barracks which includes the hisorical barracks buildings where Lee, Grant, Sherman and others served before the ACW. In Jefferson Barracks is a new Missouri in the Civil War museum that is well done. Regarding Lewis & Clark (Louisiana Purchase), there is the Boat House museum in old St. Charles and a Lewis & Clark museum in Hartford, IL (near Alton, IL). The Missouri History Museum in Forest Park would be something to look into. (So would the Zoo and the Art Museum if you want to move outside of military/history). There is a Daniel Boone home/village where Dan'l lived his later life which is in Defiance, MO near St. Charles. And there are many wineries and some micro-breweries, if you get thirsty. There is so much to see in the St. Louis metropolitan area. Everything I have mentioned is within and hours drive from downtown St. Louis. The arch museum is closed due to construction of the new park they are making. If you come back in a year or 2 for that, it will be great! I hope you enjoy yourself while here! |

Fort de Chartres is an 18th century French fort, about an hours drive away. The website fortdechartres.us is under reconstruction, but Wikipedia is fairly descriptive. Open 9-5 Wed to Sun, I believe. If you are a train and transportation buff, The Museum of Transportation is a great destination. link |

Highly recommend the Missouri Botanical Garden (MOBOT or Shaw's Gardens for the locals). |

If you have kids (or nieces/nephews) the Children's Museum is really good. Also, don't forget St. Louis is the retail home of Miniature Market. They usually have some great deals on clearance items. |

Thanks, gents! Lots of great input (definitely reading up on the local food and brew scene). I was in St Louis on a conference two years ago. If only I had known about Miniature Market then. A side trip then would have been an no brainer. Not so much on this trip given the dynamics--we'll see. Best, Ed M |
