I have the Military History Channel on as background noise while I do chores, and there is a cool show on about ferocious dogfighting over Hanoi.
The North Vietnamese pilots are no slouches. Did any of them become Aces, and were they publicized?

I suppose I could Google it, but I like asking my buddies on TMP first. grin

I blieve the NVA did …

I think that the North Vietnamese had a dozen or so who claimed ace status, the top scorer had 9 or 10 kills.

When you say North Koreans does that include Soviet volunteers. I believe they had an ace but he was a so called volunteer from the Soviet Union.

Huh. Turns out the NVA had several *aircraft* claiming ace status. Everyone in the cavalry knows that the horses are the brains of the outfit anyway.

The VPAF claimed sixteen aces. Nguyen Van Coc ( link ) was their ace of aces with nine kills … all in a Mig-21 of the 921st Regiment in the 1967-69 time-frame.

The Air Aces home page lists 16 VPAF aces and 4 NKAF aces.

Maybe still hiding up their sleeves?

We can't let this topic pass without at least a mention of the infamous "Colonel Toon." Turns out he was mythical (or at least, that's the official line now), but it's a hell of a story.

I worked with one man who was a mercenary pilot for North Vietnam. He didn't claim to be an ace though. See my write up. link

I think the name of one was Toom.

There were numerous Soviet aces in the Korean War, not certain how many were flying under North Korean colors. I have yet to see a mention about any North Korean aces.
