I'm watching the BBC series The Musketeers, & in an episode, the Duke of Savoy features heavily. It is mentioned that France needs an alliance with Savoy because it borders Spain & would act effectively as a buffer state.

I don't expect absolute historical accuracy in shows like this, but doesn't Savoy border what is now Italy? I know Spain had interests all over Europe throughout the Renaissance, but did it "own" parts of Italy? & would that area have been considered part of the actual Kingdom of Spain?

Or did the Musketeers' writers completely screw up & pick a Duchy from the wrong side of France? It would seem like it should have been a simple thing to find a more geographically appropriate area to use instead.

Nope Spanish Habsburgs had possesions in North Italy until the Austrian Habsburgs got them after the War of Spanish Succesion.

Here a nice map:

Wasn't Milan part of the Hapsburg holdings at that time?

Further to a quick search for the siege of Geneva by Savoy in 1602, and following some entries in Wikipedia, these entries would seem to cover some of what you mention:

Wasn't the siege of Casale in the "Flashing Blade" set thereabouts?
