Some people have already said they don't care for 5th E Dungeons and Dragons, but I'm ready to embrace change. The starter box comes with some dice (added to the pile), 5 pre made 1st level characters, core rules, and a pre made campaign.

First off, the 5 pre made PCs. Normally I shy away from pre mades but I really like these. They all have interesting backgrounds and everything to do with stats and gear has been filled out for you. They left character description and names blank, so the player can customize. On the back of each is a guide for developing stat wise as you level up. Again, I really like these and can see a lot of use for them. Either as a guide for making your own, or a quick way to start a newbie while still giving them the chance to develop their own way.

The core rules are all there. Combat, Ability Checks, Equipment, and anything else you need to know to get playing. It is easy to read and provides detailed examples of why you make certain rolls and how they affect you. It is well formatted and directs you to relevant pages clearly.

The pre made campaign seems cool, I haven't fully looked it over to be honest, but I will soon. As a bonus, the back of the pre made campaign book has a lot of monsters re statted for 5th edition, which is nice because the monster manual wont be out for a while. It also comes with a guide for how to run games for players level 1-5.

All in all I feel it's a great way to jump into 5th Edition with a clear sense of direction and purpose. I am really psyched to keep playing, and it justifies its $20 USD price tag.

Thanks for letting us know!

I haven't picked mine up yet, been out of state.

I liked the playtest. so hopefully this stays true to that spirit.

I don't think I've had players or my PCs get much above 5th level (maybe 7th or 8th?) since 1st edition. Even then not sure we made it very far since games in our teens were pretty bloody, ending with TPKs often.

This sounds like fun.

Everything about 5e seems like a win to me. I'm looking forward to getting back into things after skipping 1.5 editions.

I am not crazy about just how bare bones the starter set is (though the adventure seems pretty decent), but the rules I really like (between the starter and free Basic PDF). I preordered all three main core books, and really intend to give it a try. I think this could be the go-to system for old school D&D players, and with the likely add-ons mods, probably many of the 3.x crowd as well.

Maybe not… the OSR crowd seems somewhat 'meh' about it so far. For one thing it retains a good bit of 3e and 4e in its core.
Even Zak S., one of the popular OSR bloggers who was hired to consult on it has said he's got no particular plans to run it.
There are so many great new games riffing on older versions of D&D that unless having that brand name stamped on its butt REALLY matters to you 5e has no special draw.
