I see Ian Kay at Irregular has posted some work in progress on their new 15mm Tai Ping range. They're looking pretty good and I'm delighted to see a cavalryman.

You can see them here

Time to locate my TVAG Tai Ping flags.

Thanks for the heads-up!

That's very attractive. I must get some (can't have too many 'horde' figures for TSATF).

Excellent. I asked Ian about these a year a go when working on my "Taiping Era" rules.

Next up we need some French for the 1860 China Campaign.

Oh Bugger18 Jul 2014 9:43 a.m. PST

It would be good to have some actual Chinese 'Imps' too.

I like the idea of the Tai Ping combined Jingal and swordsmen units.

I feel a campaign coming on.

Ian's Chinese Imperials from the Boxer Range are serviceable as mid 19th century Imperials. The main problem is the Mongol cavalry, but I got some from Museum Miniatures and they're perfectly acceptable. Have a look at these blog posts from last year:

Nice blog there Trebian and some interesting games. I liked your take on a Chinese fort.

Yeah I'm using Museum Mongols too, and they, nice figures and all, will do, not quite right though.

Khurasan have some good ones. They come in twelves and I base to Piquet in eights per cavalry unit. No harm in three units I suppose.

What I would really like is some Hua Army Chinese. You're right some of Ian's Boxers will do for Chines Green Standard troops and I have some for just that purpose. I have a unit of his Tigermen too.

I'm guessing you have seen General Hope Grant's Opium War diary on line? If not I'll post a link. Its a good read.

@Trebian: That is some inspiring work! The ma jiang tiles are a nice touch! When might your rules be published?

I haven't seen the Hope Grant diary. I read Wolseley's journal when I was on holiday in China. It's an excellent read too.

The "uniforms" for the Hua Army are a bit of a problem. I relied on Ian Heath's big green book for uniforms and I have gone for them being similar to Imps. Even the Taiping put white unit markers on their front & backs and hats are civilian fashion.

The "Chinese Fort" is a wooden puzzle kit of the Tiananmen Gate with the picture of Mao removed. I got mine in China (last day I was there!) and you may be lucky enough to get one on line. The pagodas are likewise a China purchase off a souvenir tat stall.

I'm also pleased with the mini Mah Jong tiles that add a bit of cultural air to the whole thing. I tried (and failed) to find a use for Chinese Chess pieces.

The rules were published in Nugget 267 (Jan 2014) if you have a friend who is a WD member.

Here is the link to Hope Grant.

Yeah I have Ian Heath's Green Book and his Osprey.

The Green book has a nice line drawing of a Hua soldier(fig13) Lamprey described their uniform as black knee length trousers with a uniform purple jacket edged yellow, he wears putees and a turban. It would be good to have a couple of Hua figures.

Have you considered QRF for the French? Very good Turcos that would do for 1860 Zouaves in China.

Forgot that picture. When I looked quickly thought it was a standard Imp. Ian does a Chinese infantry man in a turban that will do for one of them. I have a load. I forgot, – it's a year or so since I bought the figures (October 12, I think).

I've looked at a number of ranges for the French, – they're basically Crimean War from what I've seen.

Oh Bugger20 Jul 2014 5:59 a.m. PST

I was thinking of this one for French Zouaves

What do you think?

They might do it. The rest of the range look the business too.

I probably need to take some completed Irregular Brits to a show and compare them for size etc.

Well, after the current project is finished. Only 25 boxes of Hat/Italeri plastic figures to paint…

Oh Bugger20 Jul 2014 3:09 p.m. PST

I've just put a base of them next to a base of Irregular British IM British advancing – its a perfect match in height and girth.

QRF have a sale on but it ends tomorrow.

QRF have a sale on but it ends tomorrow.

I think that it may already have ended, but there should be a next time…

With the speed I paint I can wait until next year's sale.
