link "And this new Thor isn't a temporary female substitute – she's now the one and only Thor, and she is worthy!" Does anyone think Thor will still be female in, say, 10 years time? Rather than changing the gender of legacy characters (and a norse god has a long legacy) why can't comics create and develop new female characters? Or just put some effort into developing the female characters they already have? And why, for Kirby's sake, can they not pull their fingers out and produce a Wonder Woman film or X-Men Origins: Storm? Thor-as-a-woman may produce some interesting ideas, at least initially. It will get them exposure on news sites. But is it really doing anything for female superheroes in comics in the long run? |

I like this idea. The new Thor is not about political correctness or feminism or anything like that. It's about a good and decent person being given the power to mete out justice. if you want to be Superman, you have to be born Superman. If you want to be Batman, you have to be a billionaire. Now with Thor, you just have to pick up the hammer. |

I could not disagree more. It [I]is about being PC, but only for the purpose of generating PR. It's a cheap publicity stunt. No, the female Thor won't last 18 months. |

Well, Marvel can't produce a Wonder Woman film for Kirby's sake or anyone else – Wonder Woman is a DC product. |

I can see the comic now…the Old Thor undergoes gender reassignment surgery and Thor becomes…Thor. Perfect for the modern era. |

Thor's been a frog too, and (as is happening with the current storyline) his hammer and his powers have been given to horseheaded aliens and random construction workers in the past. Odin just plain likes to mess with people's heads, and being his son doesn't make you immune. This is not a groundbreaking concept, it's a Red Kryptonite story in disguise (ie a radical but transitory change to a character that will be forgotten once the narrative arc ends). But hey, it got the mainstream media to pay attention, briefly. |

If you turn a deity into a superhero in the first place where is the tipping point before you cannot suspend belief? I agree its a PR stunt but it doesn't bother me any more than any other PR stunt. I mean its not like they could have just invented a female with Thor like qualities…oh wait… |

Terrement, you are the wind beneath my wings! And I agree -- this idea is beyond stupid and reeks of PC'ness. Just hand Wonder Woman over to Joss Whedon and you'll have your strong female superhero. |

Jason Aaron, writer of the new Thor series, said in a statement: "This is not She-Thor. This is not Lady Thor. This is not Thorita. This is Thor." Uh… no. No, it ain't.

How long before Marvel realise the bullet wound to the foot hurts? Marvel already blew both legs off at the knees back in the 90's when they went exclusive with Heroes' World for distribution. Not that most people remember that grim period in the industry. |

You mean comics are chock full of pop culture gimmicks just to sell issues? Next thing you'll be telling me is that Superman dies, Batman dies, Ms Marvel is Muslim, Spiderman gets married, Spiderman is Doc Ock and vice versa, Spiderman dies, Speedy has AIDS, ect ect ect. At least there should be little reading, with the comic being mostly splash pages like most modern comics. Wait until next year to fish these issues out of the 50cent bins. |

So, apparently there are no "worthy" female goddesses to make a movie about, instead????? Sounds like the writers/directors/etc. need to take a 95% pay cut, due to a lack of mythological awareness, and/or a total lack of creativity. "The War on Men" continues. |

What part of the original (5th-10th century) Thor being a cross dresser didn't anyone get? Even the comic books version of his costume is actually female – the two round/oval brooches holding his cape is exclusively female in the Northern European tradition. |

The new Thor is not about political correctness or feminism or anything like that Yes it is along with them killing off Archie. Just like the new Ms Marvel and Green Lantern being gay. I stop buying comics even before GW ticked me off enough to stop playing 40K and WFB. |

The pre-modern prejudice that restricts mythic characters to certain sexes for all future interpretations. Pre-moderns societies get vexed when their myths are interpreted in ways outside the customary. And I am not even saying I am any better. I got my prejudices. But I am plenty happy the people who want to make a buck are willing to look beyond my own prejudices. Because money has no soul to save, no color, no gender. All it cares about is supply and demand. And for the comic industry giants like DC and Marvel their main target is teens. Has it not ever passed your minds that modern teens do not necessarily think the way some of you do? And that there is a big un-tapped market of female, and yes (less big) transgender teens who have not tapped into the comics industry yet (or are mostly buying alternative stuff like Oni Press or Dark Horse). So they will lose a number of older fans, many of which may not even be regular buyers. They may even lose some , they may very well offset it with a bigger base. But hey, if you prefer the explanation, go right ahead. And the funny thing is that its not like you cannot get more "traditional" socially comics. Each person is free to hold whatever prejudices they want. As I said I have my own and I am ashamed of most of them, but there you have it. But one is free to call them what they are. |

Don't really understand why people are making such a big deal over this. As I understand it Thor is not becoming a woman, its more like Thor , for what ever reasons the writers have come up with is unable to wield his hammer Mjolnir so its handed off to a woman who takes on the name Thor to take his place. I wouldn't be surprised if the classic male Thor makes appearances in this new series. |
