BRB, I've said it before, but I'll have to say it again, just how many bl**dy Romans does one man need (LOL). Nice figures. |

Hi Simon, my source for Companion Miniatures has a decent amount (unpainted) of their Republican Roman range, suitable for the Punic and Macedonian Wars, if you're interested. Same goes for anyone else! I was going to buy them for the sake of having them, but I'm already committed to the Caesareans, so I'll happily bow out if anyone else would like them… |

Thanks chaps! Olicana, it rather depends on how many Romans one man can get his mits on. :) Paul, that's really kind of you to think of me. They are very nice minis but I shall use the Aventines for this period, because I love them, and am underway! I have a friend who is collecting the Companions, though, and I'll ask him if he needs more. Cheers, Simon |

Paul, it is NOT me collecting the Repubilican Romans from Companion!!!!!!!! Mike Adams |

You lucky person, you. Redzed, Dave Imrie and Craig Davey painting figures for you. Dave Imrie is definitely one of my favorite miniature painter! |

Hi Oldbob, it's not so much that they've painted for me, as sold me part completed projects that they've moved on from. I love completing other peoples projects, especially when they can paint like that! Best, Simon |

Come on Bob. You are a fine painter yourself. Time to get some Romans done! |
oldbob | 16 Jul 2014 7:14 p.m. PST |
Pat; kind words thank you, but you need to see Dave Imrie's Arthurian, truly fantastic work! I stole all his color schemes and ideas that I could. I'm such a disgrace and a fraud! |

Simon Wonderful paint job on such excellent figures. I do like the way the open order velites are deployed, been racking my brain for how best to base open order troops – sabots are just not that 'nice'. May experiment with 60mm wide x 80mm deep bases for 4 foot – Hail Caesar small units of 8. I have 16 of the velites being used as Seleucids or Pontics. Lucky you. Garry |

Hi oldbob, I bought Dave Imrie's Arthur. ;) Bloody stunning. Hi Garry, I don't like sabots, either. I'm mostly basing lights 3 to a 60 x 60 these days; occasionally 4. I do a few on 30 x 60 bases to help make the most effective use of storage. There is a lot to be said for the larger Impetus bases, too… Cheers, Simon |

Olicana: Pot. Kettle. :) Standards for Velites? Tell me you just liked the look of it and that I don't have to paint up some standard bearers and rebase my lot… |
oldbob | 17 Jul 2014 7:04 a.m. PST |
Oh BigRedBat; how did you get him to part with that miniature? Do you also have his unit of infantry with the head swops? Oh how I envy you! |
BigRedBat | 20 Jul 2014 3:31 a.m. PST |
Hi Adam, I had the standard bearer minis, and just liked the look of them. Oldbob, no I don't have a unit of infantry with headswaps, but I do have a few other bits from him, that I hope to build into units this winter. Best, Simon |

BigRedBat makes basing look so easy, but it takes a little planning to get it looking good! |

@ adster: You shouldn't feel obligated to have leaders for velites – there's been no evidence of them having their own standards – so I've read and am aware of none. I think it's completely optional – I originally painted up some but took them out. Though I must say that the above look REALLY cool. Yes, awesome basing – I'm going to take some pointers here… |
BigRedBat | 20 Jul 2014 10:14 a.m. PST |
It's certainly optional. I read somewhere that the reason for the velites wearing distinctive gear, one from the other, was so that their individual brave deeds could be recognised. In my units the officers with the standards are the ones doing the recognising! Thanks re the basing. Best, Simon |
