I was looking at the news pages and was impressed by the cover design of Minarion's new SCW release of militia women. This got me thinking about the quality – or otherwise – of the box art of miniature manufacturers. We've all seen some of the rather nightmarish designs that used to feature on Wargames Factory releases (now much better with the AWI stuff). So what are your favorite? The classy paintings of Perry, photographic covers of miniatures like Battlefront? I'm actually looking at the Agema box of Republican Roman Velites and I quite like that myself– almost old-school style illustrative art. Well? Best (and worst)? |

So wrong, it is right…
Skill level 2 is also a bit optimistic! |

Worst would have to be the terrible box cover for the boardgame 'Napoleon at Bay' back in the 1980s. By AH if IRC. |

:) Worst one ever. The OSG cover art was much better. Glad you found it. |

I (weirdly) kinda like that,in a primitive 'Folk Art' way. Hmmm. I wonder if there is a good online collection of AH box art?

Here's a gallery of the box cover art of Rodger B. MacGowan. He's the fellow who did the cover art for Squad Leader and many other iconic board game covers. He's also the art director and VP of GMT Games. link |

The box art for the Tamiya Afrika Korps 1/35 scale figures grabbed me in the model aisle of the drugstore in 1971. "Whoa, Rat Patrol Nazis!" said ten year-old me. The whole package spoke of a mystery wrapped in a conundrum. A Japanese company makes models of German troops who operated in the desert in Africa? And vehicles to match? Sign me up!!! link |

Pretty much any of the GW box sets. They certainly invoke the universe they are set in, be it fantasy or Sci Fi. |

All the Deus Vult covers from Fireforge are particularly cool. |
