I'm mostly a 15mm gamer, regardless of period, though I do have the odd stuff lying around in other scales here and there. Do you mostly stick with one scale or is everything different for you? |
Pictors Studio | 15 Jul 2014 1:18 p.m. PST |
It varies a lot. I have the same period in different scales. I have Napoleonic naval in 28mm, 1/900 and 1/2400. I have sci-fi in 6mm, 10mm, 15mm, 28mm and 54mm. I have ECW in 10mm and 28mm plus some ECW like figs for my eastern ren stuff in 15mm. |
Whirlwind | 15 Jul 2014 1:19 p.m. PST |
Mostly 6mm, but it does depend on the game; some skirmish stuff in 15mm, 20mm or 25mm depending. |
Winston Smith | 15 Jul 2014 1:21 p.m. PST |
15mm for Flamrs of War. 25/28 mm for everything else. |
Herkybird | 15 Jul 2014 1:22 p.m. PST |
Mostly 28mm, but 20,15mm and 10mm are popular at our club |
IUsedToBeSomeone | 15 Jul 2014 1:31 p.m. PST |
Various scales, I do have a rule to only do each period n one scale though as otherwise that leads to madness… 28mm Dark Ages, FPW and Wars of the Roses and skirmish gaming (gangsters, pirates, etc). 15mm for Napoleonics, WSS, ECW, etc 54mm for Little Wars and North West Frontier. 20mm for WW2 Different scales seem to suit different periods and sometimes a range of figures catches my imagination… |
ubercommando | 15 Jul 2014 1:38 p.m. PST |
I have various prejudices when it comes to figure scale and periods. For WW2 I prefer 20mm and have resisted upscaling to 28mm. I have Flames of War forces in 15mm but that's mainly because I know a lot of FoW gamers and have joined in the fun. My preference for 20mm is that it's the sweet spot; small enough to enable a company sized force on a 6 x 4 table but big enough to paint nicely. For most periods where I'm manoeuvring large armies at division or corps scale I opt for 15mm and that covers most horse and musket or 19th Century wars. Again, I find it the optimum scale that sits between attractiveness and getting many figures on the table. My dabble in 28mm has been purely with skirmish gaming, such as 7TV and IHMN. |
Doug MSC | 15 Jul 2014 1:43 p.m. PST |
I have had 15mm, 20mm, 25mm 28mm and 54mm armies. I have since sold off everything and now do just 40mm in four periods, AWI, ACW, Medieval and Wild West. |
leidang | 15 Jul 2014 1:45 p.m. PST |
I'm all over the place from 6mm to 28mm. I try not to duplicate a time period in multiple scales but I've broken this rule for sci-fi and moderns. 6mm – Giant Monsters, Moderns 10mm – Fantasy, AWI, Russo-Turkish War 15mm – Ancients, SYW, WWII, Zulu War, Moderns, Sci-Fi 28mm – 13th Warrior, Horror, Gladiators, Maharatta Wars, Northwest Frontier, Moderns, Sc-Fi |
Bob in Edmonton | 15 Jul 2014 1:48 p.m. PST |
Used to be all 6mm. Now all 1/72 except one old 25mm project I can't let go and a set of board game minis (about 12mm). |
Boondock Saint | 15 Jul 2014 1:55 p.m. PST |
28mm for anything before WW II. 15mm for WW II to the modern day because fielding 15mm vehicles is more cost effective and practical in terms of space. That said, I have a large force of 28mm moderns and 28mm zombies, and am working on 15mm VSF. And am wanting to do 15/18mm fantasy. Guess I don't stick to my own rule at all well. |
Sundance | 15 Jul 2014 2:05 p.m. PST |
Mostly 15s, but I also have some 25/28 and some 1/285. |
Whirlwind | 15 Jul 2014 2:51 p.m. PST |
@Bob, Why did you change over? |
KTravlos | 15 Jul 2014 3:01 p.m. PST |
I have tried to regulate my scales. For example I got rid of most of my 10mm and 6mm stuff vowing to stick to 15mm and 28mm. Currently my Fantasy,Saga, and 19th century/Napoleonic Collections are 28mm My DBA armies are all 15mm and will remain so. For some reason 15mm works well for DBA for me. However I still have a 6mm Bacchus French army I am thinking of re-basing from the current battalion level ( 1 unit=1 battalion) to company level (6 units= 1 battalion). And I am thinking of an 17th Century project and I am between 15mm or 6mm. That said I would really like to avoid having multiple scales. A lot depends on what kind of space I will have in Turkey. |

Terrement: Could that other metal line of 54mm metals have been Bugle and Guidon? I know that Miniature Andreas has (had?) a range of 54mm Western items , including a Stage. I am more of a collector of armies in multiple scales for the periods I like best to paint. (like SYW from 5mm (H&R), 6mm (Adler), 10mm (Iregular, Old Glory, Pendragon) 15mm (Minifigs, Dixon, Roundway) 20mm: Outland; Plastics-Revell, Zevzda, HAT(more 25mm than 20's); 25mm (Minifigs); 28mm Front Rank, Old Glory, Foundry; 1/32-54mm (Preiser) 1/24th (Preiser). Plus individual collector's scales for when I think I feel "inspired"…. |

Mostly 15mm. 1/285 for larger WWII battles. I also have 10mm WWII that I was using for the larger WWII battles, but I couldn't do large enough battles, so I still have them, but use them for something between skirmish and large fights. |

I wish I was that organised! I think without exception I have 6mil, 10mil, 15mil and 28mil for all my periods! |
Yesthatphil | 15 Jul 2014 3:37 p.m. PST |
It varies … mostly 6 to 54mm though (15mms look the best but I am trying to break the habit) .. I pick the scale that most suits what I want to achieve with the game. And to make sure my collection has something of everything … Phil Ancients on the Move |

For me it is pretty much 28mm since most of my terrain is the same. But WW2 I have 20mm, 60mm (King & Country) and 1/6th scale. The larger the figures, the smaller the type of scenario. Can only do a small squad or fire them in 1/6th, unless I have 20 players at a convention. Matthew |

6mm for everything (X-Wing sort of counts as 6mm) except skirmish (right now, just Ludus Gladiatorius and SoB&H). Doug |
Cosmic Reset | 15 Jul 2014 5:18 p.m. PST |
Scale is mostly a function of the scope of the game for me. 15mm for most of my WWII and post war/modern games, as it is the smallest scale that allows me to easily handle individually mounted infantry and permits me to use platoons and a few companies in my games. 6mm for larger games of WWII and post war/moderns. I can field many companies, and some battalions and regiments with 1 to 1 vehicle representation and infantry squads or fire teams based 28mm for more adventure based games set in the Victorian/Colonial period or near future/science fiction settings. The larger scale also allows for more artistic detail in the models. 20mm for Vietnam. I would have gone with 15mm, but there are not enough aircraft available. additionally, at 20mm the figures are a little easier to manage in the tabletop jungle. 28mm would be nice, but the size of boats, planes and ground scale would limit the scope of games more than I'd like. |
Tgunner | 15 Jul 2014 5:31 p.m. PST |
15 Mike for me as well. It's the perfect scale… Except for truly massive armored battles. Then I break out the 6mm. |

Most of my collection is 15mm but I do have a number of renaissance armies in 6mm but on 15mm bases. I also have a number of 1/72nd and 28mm projects that so far have never managed to get into action and some small scale naval stuff. If I was starting again from scratch I would probably look to do everything in 6mm. |
CATenWolde | 16 Jul 2014 2:43 a.m. PST |
10mm for ACW and Colonials, and also for future 18th century, but I'll probably go with 6mm for Napoleonics (Adler's range is much more complete, and as "large" 6mm the size isn't all that different). I went with 15mm for Dux Brit, mostly because I wanted to downsize from 28mm but the Splintered Light figures are so wonderful for that period. |

@whirlwind Aging eyes, disinterest from gaming group in playing with 6mm, desire to paint something more challenging. Nothing wrong with 6mm, just moved on. |

Depends on the period All my Ancients/Medieval/ECW/Seven Years War/Colonial/Interwar/Sci-Fi are 28mm My Napoleonics are 28mm and 6mm My WWII are 28mm (very few), 20 mm and 6mm My ACW are 54mm, 28mm, 15mm (lots and lots) and 6mm (hey – I like ACW) |

The odd bits are mostly gone and any thing left is just that, bits. When I focused on 15 mm, that kept me quasi-sane regarding this hobby. And then it lead to having over 32,000 figures! I did say "quasi" didn't I? But, seriously, by focusing on just one scale, it has helped keep things in a reasonable check and many items are useful across various periods (though certainly not all – spoked wheels versus solid wheels, etc.) Anyone out there with a lot of spare painting time, swing by my place and I can give you something to do – for six or seven months I can give you something to do, full time, over time even (but no pay, just gratitude, sorry about that part but you can stick around to play if you like) |
