Just posted a quick tutorial on these explosions – dead simple to build and 12 for under a tenner (inc spray paint cost) link

Yep seen these at conventions and it really adds to the visual dimension of a table top war game. |

Eric – can you put the battery tabs back in when you're not using them, so the lights/batteries don't burn out as quickly? They look great, but it would be a bit annoying if you couldn't turn them off between games. |

Very good indeed. I make my own, using dayglo yellow and orange sprays along with the black, but never thought of the tea light for added effect. By the way, these are called "Splosions" in our club. Lovely job, once again. |

Mr Canuck…the ones I purchased had switches – on and off – so no problems there |

Should also add that they flicker – real burning special f/x |

Top job! What an elegant idea…I'm off to ebay for some flashy lights. :O) Thanks |

That's neat! The photo does no justice to the effect. It really needs to be an animated GIF (said the arrogant technology geek, as if it were the easiest thing in the world to do…). I'm going to have to consider making some fireships this way. - Ix |

Has anyone looked at the batteries inside their LED candles? They are probably a standard 3v button type. The model number is printed on the battery. You can find most common types of button batteries sold in bulk through Amazon for for $0.10 USD-$0.60 USD per battery. I've done exactly this many times to keep LED flashlights going for years beyond the expected useful life. Replacing batteries in cheap-ass LED devices is often hard because the internals are not meant to be easily serviced, but after you've made a model out of one, you would probably rather replace the battery than do all the shopping and crafting to make another. - Ix |

Another tip: you can buy black batting (also on Amazon) and avoid the spray paint. The one caveat is that I have yet to find black batting in a big bagful like the white polyfill stuff; I've only seen it sold in rolls, pre-pressed and ready to sew into a quilt. However, I bought a roll like that, and it tears apart and puffs up nicely. - Ix |

The batteries appear to be replaceable in the ones I bought |

Thanks for the tips Mr Shed, but if I built those my opponents would be trying even harder to blow up my tanks so the table lit up like a xmas tree! |

Quick tip for those in the States: Last time I was at Target I saw a two pack of those sorts of lights in the $1 USD section. |

Is this the size you used? link |

Truscott – that looks like the size but those are well expensive. The ebay link is right at the beginning of my blog post. |

Incidentally I used this glue to stick the fibre to the base – pva will not work… wear latex gloves
