I'd rather avoid "aliens" and "xenomorph" is probably legally risky. Any good suggestions? Best suggestion gets a free PDF copy of FiveCore. |

"I should have clarified, sorry. Creepy crawly runs on the walls and tears you to pieces aliens/space bugs." Maybe a little more detail? Insectoid? spider? mutli-legged? Big/small? parasite? fangs? blood-sucker? Razor tooth? multiple-arms? tentacles? furry/hairy? from egg/cacoon? Hive mind? centipede body? Hot/cold climate? Multi-eyed? No eyes? Does it smoke? Does it like Mexican/Chinese? sexual orientation? 8) |

I know it's a human tendency to name things after more familiar objects, so it may depend on what they're physiology is. Some examples: - From Keith Laumer's "Retief" stories: Large manta-like aliens -> "Flapjacks" Multi-limbed climbing aliens -> "Spodders" (sounds like "spiders" with a Midwestern drawl) - "District 9": aliens were called "Prawns" because of their shells and mandibles, most likely - "Space: Above and Beyond": the aliens were called "Chigs" based on their resemblance to sand fleas known as "chiggers" or "jiggers" - "Man-Kzin Wars" series: for a bit of turnabout, the Kzinti referred to human beings as "monkeys" So, I think it would be fair to base your nickname for them on their physiology. |
Lion in the Stars | 16 Jul 2014 6:01 p.m. PST |
Chig would probably be the USMC's nickname for them. "Are you scratching my sand fleas?" Parris Island is a sandflea-infested hell. "Crabs" or "crickets" is another likely name for any insect-like alien. You can have all sorts of fun with foreign languages. One of the Infinity bug types is called the "Caskuda" (Portuguese for cockroach, IIRC). For a large, tough to kill insectoid alien, what about 'gokiburi' or 'goki' (goh-key-boo-ree). It's Japanese for cockroach. |
BigNickR | 17 Jul 2014 3:17 p.m. PST |
Roaches. They come out of the walls, they're everywhere, and just when you think they're gone… |
