Probably because they had to shoot more than one missile to hit it. |

Well, they shot down a UAV with a Patriot. Rob |

Slingshot probably didn't have the needed range. |

If it saves lives its worth every penny. Worth it to a politician, because he or she won't take the heat of an identifiable death. Maybe not worth it to the various people in hospitals whose lives might be saved, or made much better, with that money. That's a great deal of money to maybe save a life. Israel will quickly go broke if that is how it "saves" lives. |

Blood Or Treasure ? It's alway a consideration. That being said as long as the missiles/rockets are falling on Israel, they don't have much of a choice. One of a nation's first priorities is protection of it's populas. So sure if the money spent on defense could be spent on other things like medical research, etc. that would be great in a perfect world. But that is the question for many countries, "Guns or Butter" ? And if you notice the Israelis backs' are to the wall, in many cases almost daily … |

You always have a choice. The hawks say you don't, because they go for the military option first, but that is why the army shouldn't run the state. There are cheaper options for Israel, that they won't accept politically. Until they run out of money. |
COL Scott ret | 15 Jul 2014 10:36 p.m. PST |
Yes surrender is an option, as is allowing a group of terrorist to dictate to you. Not a good option as the terrorist only really want to destroy Israel they don't want peace. So the option of a moral nation ought to be to protect its citizens from a declared enemy first, then work on additional medical research, etc. To borrow a quote: "War is an ugly thing, but not the ugliest of things. The decayed and degrade state of moral and patriotic feeling which thinks that nothing is worth fighting for is much worse. The person who has nothing which is more important than his own personal safety, is a miserable creature and has no chance of being free unless made and kept so by the exertions of better men than himself." They don't really have the money now. Look at the size of the Israeli military. The nation has an economy roughly the size of that of Ireland. Look at Irelands' military. Israel isn't paying for those toys, the US taxpayer is. The entire problem could be solved by the US cutting all funding to Israel and replacing it with a guarantee of the integrity of the 1967 borders. |

I agree with COL Scott, of course he and I were both soldiers, so our POVs may be different than others. Yes much of the funding for The Iron Dome system was supplied by the US. Which means most likely US will be able to produce a similar system or buy it from the IDF. If the US ever wanted such a system. Who knows it may be in the US inventory already ? It appears to be a useful defensive weapon. As I said before as long as there are factions who want to drive the Israelis into the sea … regardless of replacing the original '67 borders. Which from a military standpoint is not a good move. The conflict will continue … |

Why should Israel care at all about the expense? As long as any U.S. taxpayer has two dimes to rub together, the Israelis don't have to worry about funding. The vast majority of the ID funding is, and has been, covered by the U.S. defense budget. Of course, Israel also finds other imaginative ways of covering their defense expenses with U.S. funding, such as illegally re-selling U.S.-origin Patriot missiles (with our latest technology) to China. But after all, since they're fighting for their lives, I'm sure they can morally justify anything, especially to themselves. |

But after all, since they're fighting for their lives, I'm sure they can morally justify anything, especially to themselves. That pretty much says it all for most people on the planet … Probably even moslem fanatics … This sentence in particular – I'm sure they can morally justify anything, especially to themselves. |
