I always spare a thought for the poor Swiss defenders of the Bastille, several of whom were killed. Many more died during the weeks following. The Revolution and the following wars caused much misery in France and throughout mainland Europe, but, I believe, in the long term made modern Europe as it remains today. Vive La France! |
