I've got exactly the same approach. Great to see it work that well.
One question, though (which puzzles me for years on end …):
Is there an easy possibility to "blend" the roads and rivers even more into the landscape, in other words to avoid those gaps between them and the basic cloth?
I know this is nitpicking, but maybe someone out there has got some thoughts …

Velcro strips cut to size might help with sticking streams and roads to the base mat, but a lot depends on the material of the mat, I suppose.

Velcro strips cut to size might help with sticking streams and roads to the base mat, but a lot depends on the material of the mat, I suppose. It looks great anyway.

The advantage of felt strips is that it can be twisted as a meadder to follow the bottom of the valley which velcro will not

I like the forests. I was looking at woods while out in the countryside the other day. From outside the wood you cannot actually see any tree trunks. All you see is foliage all the way to the ground!

I have that large a gaming space, but I don't have gilded framed oil paintings on the walls!

Actually the room is all theatrical prop. Fireplace fake from a discarded door, large Napoleon at Jena is a 24MB photo from a book photocopied in 28 A3 sheets framed in polystyrene coving and a scrap recovered ex air traffic ops room light rewired with energy saving lamps. and 6 months every saturday plastering and painting.
Result a very appropriate wargaming environment.
