Hi there,
I'm stuck on painting my Napoleonic Portuguese canons. My question is simple, were the barrels brass or iron/black or either? I see both and won't break down if I get it wrong! My preference might be for iron just to make them different to all my brass guns!
Any help would be much appreciated.
Cheerio chaps,
JJ

If they were brass / bronze they were left that colour but left to go dull in the field (polished in barracks). If they were iron they were painted black (sometimes – British – dark brown).

I thought that the British supplied the Portuguese with the guns for their artillery from ~1808?

it would be very unusual to use iron guns for field artillery; usual practice for fortesss artillery, though.
