Hi there, I'm stuck on painting my Napoleonic Portuguese canons. My question is simple, were the barrels brass or iron/black or either? I see both and won't break down if I get it wrong! My preference might be for iron just to make them different to all my brass guns! Any help would be much appreciated. Cheerio chaps, JJ |

If they were brass / bronze they were left that colour but left to go dull in the field (polished in barracks). If they were iron they were painted black (sometimes – British – dark brown). |

I thought that the British supplied the Portuguese with the guns for their artillery from ~1808? |

it would be very unusual to use iron guns for field artillery; usual practice for fortesss artillery, though. |
