G'day! I'm sure I need hardly remind true blue Aussies that next year is the 100th of Gallipoli! I'm a pom and its on my radar! My uni club is currently mulling over what theme to choose for our annual convention, GongCon, assuming we hold one next year, usually some time in March. Gallipoli is an obvious consideration….But given we will be holding it at the University of Wollongong, which has a eminent area of research and study in this area, we want to do it right and with a bit of style! So the question arises, will we be the only club showcasing Gallipoli this year? Surely not, right? But if not, and you are in the Southern Sydney/Illawarra district, would your group be interested in collaborating with us around such a project? And what else is happening around Gallipoli 2015-1915 wargaming wise? Any news, thoughts gratefully received…. (The small print, to forestall any obvious rabbit holes: 1. I know Gallipoli wasn't the first Australian expeditionary action… 2. I know Gallipoli wasn't just an Australian action, there were far more Brits, French, Newfies and Allies involved, Bless 'Em All! But – its become an Aussie Icon of sacrifice and courage, even more than the Somme, and Palestine, that's all.) |

We've been thinking about doing a library display (you know: in the little locked display cases they have in all municipal libraries) using HaT figures. |

I have quite a few 28mm Turks painted up but have not been able to find anyone else with Brits locally. I might be able to get some Brits done for the Palestine Anniversary at some stage. |

I will be doing a 1:300 scale (6mm) version of all of the landings, i.e. with most of the peninsula represented. This will be run as a mega-game, with separate commanders for each of the landing forces and for each of the major Ottoman defending units. Rules will be Great War Spearhead II. Location will somewhere in UK, most likely one or more of the large conventions. Robert |

Please post pictures of that, Monk, it sounds to be extremely impressive! Probably not doing anything for 2015, though it would let me recycle some terrain from the WW2 Desert campaign. |

Yes please post photos Robert – sounds wonderful! |

Eureka will be releasing a 28mm vignette of a 2-up game to commemorate the anniversary. |

I will happily post photos. Here is a previous example, covering the Battle of Cambrai. The battlefield was more sparse than the slopes of Gallipoli but it gives you some idea of the scale we will be using: link Robert |

Really interesting to see your photos and report on Cambrai, Robert – thanks. I've been trying to get myself motivated into a WWI project for the centenary and Great War Spearhead II is the first ruleset that's captured my interest. I promptly picked up a copy today (PDF download is a godsend for rules junkies!). I'll be gaming WWI in 6mm. I've only dipped into them at this stage but am liking the look of the artillery rules. My grandfather was a cartographer for Monash in 1917-18 and brought home many of the barrage maps he created. I used to study them for hours as a lad – they have since been loaned to the national war memorial. Would love to see it in action on the gaming table! Will follow the planned Gallipoli events with interest – I can see there's some good possibilities with GWS II. |

Wow!!!! That's an insanely large table, did you use croupier sticks to reach the middle? Looking forward to what you do for Gallipoli. |

Alan, that is fascinating information about your grandfather. The barrage maps were very complex and I bet I have seen his handiwork in the archives at Kew. I will share the maps that are created for the Gallipoli project. In a couple of weeks we will be trying out the Kallistra hexon terrain system with 5-6 tables that cover the First Battle of the Marne. The town of Dormans has provided two big rooms in the local chateau so looking forward to a week of mega-gaming. There will be 22 divisions in total, including 4 cavalry corps and the BEF cavalry division. Robert |
