Crosspost from Sculpting jammed up on me. Sorry, Editor. ;)

If you're thinking of getting into making 15mm/1-100th scale mecha that are in the same ballpark as other offerings in the market, with a lot of conversion parts compatibility, here are some build guidelines…

Nice! What software do you use? What would you recommend? I'm trying to learn Maya, but maybe that's not the best choice?

I use Rhino3d, but there are many roads (programs) to the destination (printable file).

What you want is a program that can put out a watertight STL mesh.

I explain more here.

That link is part 2 of a 4 part series I did as a 3D primer for folks wanting to get into rapid prototyping.
Here are the others…

I like the standardised ball socket joint, gonna have to use that.

Just make sure that if you want some flex in the elbow joint, the ball isn't embedded into the male object too much.

If you just want your weapon or accessory to rotate, embed the sphere so it looks like a dome.

If you want more freedom of movement (pan, pitch, and roll), have it sticking up on a very small riser, like a trailer hitch.
Embed only the bottom 1/3rd of the sphere into the object, leaving 2/3rd of the sphere sticking out.

For examples of each, see the Heavy HAMR suit pic above. The bottom two cannons are similar, but the longer cannon has a simple dome, the shorter cannon has a "trailer hitch" style sphere on a riser.

Best,
JBR

I need to remember all of this beautiful source material when I paint up my mechs.

They're so tiny and shiny, I want to get all of the detail.
