Maybe some of the TMP members can help me with a couple of questions regarding the Battle of Flodden. Did the Scots have any mounted units present at the battle? Were any of the English mounted units in full armour i.e.mounted knights? Thank you for your help. Dennis |

Not quite true re mounted. Current belief is that in common with their English brethren the Scottish border horse were at least partially mounted. |

I agree with the Marshall. The consensus seems to be that after the initial Scottish attack on the English right wing, the border horse of the respective countries kept to the saddle, eyeing each other warily, while the rest of the armies of both sides got stuck in. Hume, the commander of the Scottish horse, was later executed for his inaction. |

Link to the aforesaid link As an aside Catherine of Aragon always a popular gal with the English became the darling of the nation after Flodden as the victory acrrued to her credit Henry being abroad at the time. |

I also read that the French (always messing in Anglo-Scottish politics) had a contingent of troops on the far right of the Scottish line behind the Highlanders. Could they have been mounted? Any speculation on how they may have been dressed. Thank you for all the interesting input so far. Dennis |

No French contingent fought at Flodden as far as I have read. There may have been French military advisers present but no unit. |

Some 2ndary sources say about 50 French were present. No Scottish horse. The Borderers are usually thought to be pikemen at Flodden. Hume wasn't directly executed for his behaviour at Flodden. |

Didn't the Scottish Borderers plunder their own camp before making a getaway? -A thing easier done if mounted. |

If the Scottish camp is to be plundered by the pesky English anyway, why not liberate as much as possible to remain in Scottish hands… |

Besides the camp plunder by the Scottish Borderers, is there any other mention in primary or secondary sources of them being mounted? |

Nope.. Lord Hume chose to dismount and add men to the pike blocks.. I presume the horses were tethered somewhere close by … If you believe the theory that Home had a secret deal wirh his opposite number then there would have been an opportunity to take horse and flee. Personally, having walked the field I don't subscibe to that view. Hone would not have been in site of the main action.. there is a sizable hillock between his position and that of the kings battle.. if I had won my fight and broken the enemy in front of me then I may just have decided to return to collect my valuable horses. |
