What should a wargamer go and see?

Denbigh castle is a fine example of Edward I's architecture, and I very much enjoyed the wander through.

That said, Ludlow (just up the road) is slightly more atmospheric, has at least one resident ghost, and also has a race-track where you can bet on-course with the bookies if you feel so inclined.

Caernarvon, forty-five minutes or so to the South-West is a must, as is the museum of the 23rd (or Royal Welch fusiliers) which is contained therein.

You can always pop over to Deeside Defenders on a Thursday evening

Ludlow is in south Shropshire, I used to live there. It's hardly 'up the road' from Denbigh, it's at least a hour and half, more like two.

Whereabouts near Denbigh? I used to live in the middle of nowhere round there and you're making me feel nostalgic….

Ewloe Castle is about 30 minutes from Denbigh.

Often overlooked but important.

I remember being impressed by Dinas Bran which is nearby, although I can't recollect how close it is to Denbigh as it was about 20 years ago that I visited the area. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dinas_Bran

Bodfari

Thanks for the invitation but I generally don't do actual wargaming on holiday.

Still… you never know…

At Bodfari, you are only a stone's throw from Rhuddlan castle:

And you're not far from one of my favourite spots – Llyn (Lake) Brenig with it's very atmospheric Bronze age stone circles. Although the lake is a resevoir, created by flooding, I always found the view over the circles to the lake and beyond particularly haunting if you like remote and wild(ish) places.

I am now making myself seriously nostalgic…!

It's not a day out, but certainly worth an afternoon or morning. During the late 80's early 90's I used to camp in the castle quite regularly and not see another soul all weekend. Even now it's rare to meet anyone else there.

There was.a small battle on Denbigh Green at the end of 1645 but I'd be surprised if there's much made of it there.

You're well placed for castles of course!
