What does one need to begin playing besides, dice, pencil, character sheet?

The easiest way to proceed down a path, is to take the first step.

A gamemaster with an opening in his group who doesn't mind you using his books.

Chief Lackey has the best method. I think there is a Pathfinder intro box that might help. If you have played D&D 3.5 it is an easy transition so just get the Players Guide and start up. If you have no 3.5 experience or an open spot might I suggest D&D 5e. It looks interesting and is less complex than Pathfinder. Having said that Pathfinder is a good system if that style suits you. Check out the Pathfinder SRD.

A dry-erase grid map really helps with the combats.

We had a lot of fun with Pathfinder up too about levels 4-5 but then tired of trying too keep up with skills, stats & bonuses.

We have since gone back to 2nd Edition. Old School!

I've found that by having a Multiversal Trading company smuggle in Modern D20 firearms and heavy weapons the game really picks up.

Actually the pathfinder worldbooks are nicely done, any of those as a start point would do fine.

Lots of money (be prepared to have to sell a kidney) and a squared board to play it on…

Mick is only jealous as half his club play Pathfinder without him ;-P

25mm sqaure mat and some proxies/cardstock figures would be good. It's perfectly playable with just the Core book and one Bestiary, but once one person in a group escalates to the APG, UC, UM etc then they all will. It's all online at the PRD though needn't be too expensive.

I also recommend the beginner box. It won a couple of awards when it was first released.

Another reminder would be to check the internet for 'Pathfinder Society'. It is an international society for organized Pathfinder play. It is usually lower level adventures with emphasis on having a good time. My experience with some of their members has been genuinely friendly. The like to promote the game. Good luck and remember to have fun.
