Front Rank produces some English cavalry wearing what looks like a fur hat. Does anyone know which regiment wore these? Was it only an elite company in a given regiment that did? I can not find any reference material on English cavalry in a fur hat during the War of Spanish Succession. Can anyone enlighten me? |

The WSS was a very transitional period with a LOT of variance, delays, and colonel specific changes in uniforms, drill, and equipment. Fur or fabric "sock" dragoon hats were more common in many armies in the late 1600s. The French maintained theirs for awhile into the early 18th century, while the English changed over to tricorns. However, there were some holdovers. Arguably, Hays Dragoons of Scottish origins and predecessors of the Scots Grays may justifiably be dressed with the cap. I also put a fur cap on my version of Lloyd's Dragoons because almost all their service was in Spain, where I imagined such fashions may have survived longer. As in all things about the WSS, a certain latitude should be allowed, solely because of the, often lightly documented, constant changes and modifications. Remember, given the uncertainties, YOU are the colonel of your Wargame Regiments! |
