I'm looking for maps of specific battles, generally smaller battles, from various campaigns, anyone able to point me in some good directions? I'm not seeking current day maps, I'm looking for stuff close to the date / year of the battles: Schleiz, 1806 Halle, 1806 Prenzlau, 1806 Waren-Nossentin, 1806 Lübeck, 1806 Czarnowo, 1806 Mohrungen, 1806 Ostrołęka, 1807 Guttstadt-Deppen, 1807 Heilsberg, 1807 Maps need to provide some notion of troop dispositions, major terrain features, topography
Any assistance is appreciated thanks! Cheers, The Bandit |

Have you tried the map archive on Napoleon Series link |

Thanks, I can never seem to find my way around the Napoleon Series which drives me a bit mad because there is so much to be found there. I'm trying to figure out the scale of this map:
Not reading Russian I don't know the term being used on the scale. Anyone able to shed some light? Cheers, The Bandit |

The Bandit, It is most probably measured in versts, which are equivalent to 1.067 km or 0.66 mile. I cannot think of any other archaic Russian measurement that would fit. Jurgen |

Your best source for these campaigns would be James Arnold's books on Eylau and Friedland. You can determine the scale of your map by finding the towns on Google Earth, measuring the distance between the town centers using the ruler function, and doing some math. Stephen

Jurgen is correct. The scale on the map says "Верстѣ" (Verste/Versts). Try this for the others …. Find the Wiki for the placename in English. Then select from the left the Russian language Wiki. Get the name for the place in Russian. Then search in Google for сражение при XXXXXX карта, where XXXXXX is the Russian place name ….. example : сражение при Остроленка карта or сражение при Остроленка 1807 карта Then select the search results for Images. There should be a few maps to chose from. (Russians like maps a lot, for some reason). - Sasha |

Sasha, It is good to have that confirmed; although I speak some Russian, I have never been able to read it. Jurgen |

Jurgen, Reading Russian is not easy at all …. it takes a while before the letters stop look like "pretty designs" and start looking like actual "letters" from an alphabet. Lots of the older material, of real interest for wargaming and often available on-line for free, has the pre-revolution spelling and vocabulary, and lots of "Imperial" syntax for obsolete offices and honorifics. Some modern Russians even have trouble with this kind of material. "Верстѣ" (Verste/Versts) is an obsolete or archaic measure which no one uses – except for my driver, an old Kuban Cossack man who does not know English miles and thinks meters and kilometers were invented by bolsheviks and the devil. Since the roads are often bad and the traffic generally horrid, when he says "versts" I just think "miles" and am less often disappointed. :-) To make it harder, the letter "ѣ", called "yat", is itself obsolete – it is replaced in modern Russian by the character "e". - Sasha |
