Hello folks! Another strange question. At the Kronoskaf website, the two Pfalz infantry regiments sent to the Reichsarmee are said to have worn a linen smock instead of the coat as a summer uniform (http://www.kronoskaf.com/syw/index.php?title=Kreisinfanterieregiment_Pfalz-Zweibr%C3%BCcken and link ). Unfortunately this does not seem to be attributed to a particular source. Does anyone know how reliable the information is, and what that "smock" looked like? Thank you!

The smock is nearly standard in most countries and looks similar to the illustration.

I am not sure the smock was to replace the coat as a "uniform" but as a cost saving measure during the hot summer months. It may also denote their duties as secondary (garrison) and not primary (field army).

They did take to the field in time for Rossbach.

Cheers,

I agree that the smock would be for off duty ,not in battle. Kronskaf is .pretty reliable, once in awhile there is something amiss ,but it usually gets corrected,to the many followers who use it,it is a quite invaluable one stop scource.

Rossbach was fought in November, so I would think that the regulation wool coat would have been appropriate during the battle.

The French infantry wore sleeved waistcoats that serve as mild weather uniforms. They would discard the coat and just wear the waistcoat. I used to do SYW re-enactments as a French fusilier in the Regiment Bearn and the waistcoat was perfect from Spring through Autumn.

Normally smocks would be worn for fatigue duties in camp, or on the march to keep the dust off the uniform. Units with worn-out uniforms however, such as the Saxons in French service, sometimes had to wear them full-time.

If no suitable figures exist, perhaps AWI militia in hunting shirts could be converted?

Thanks for answering, folks! Will take this under consideration.
