At Hurricon I am going to resurrect the Historicon tradition of a big kid's game on Sunday. Instead of Princess Ryan's Space Marines we will play Star Wars games. This year we will play the Attack on Kashyyk. All kids between 7 and 12 can play. No adults. Kids will be walked through the rules by me, but will make their own decisions. I ask other game masters to consider that the hobby has grayed and we need the kids to be involved. Run a simplified version of your game, or a different game for them. Let them have fun. They will come.

I'm running a kid-friendly ship crawl game on Sunday at Historicon--though I'm not forbidding adults from playing. In fact, last year's version had a son "accidentally" shooting up his father's forces sort of on purpose and was hilarious.

Personally I believe the "graying" is more of an urban myth…but yes, running games for kids is a real blast. I have converted the Zombies!! board game using 28mm Roman Zombies, Gladiators and Cleopatra's Chariot to replace the escape chopper. Always a good time.

I'm also working on a set of miniature rules for kids…

If you can run a game with inexpensive toys like space ships or plastic soldiers, a "keep what you kill" is always popular too!

The HAWKs will be continuing their Historicon tradition of having a table entirely devoted to kids games all day Saturday. Including our annual Armies For Kids game, in which this year 6 lucky kids will walk away with complete opposing 28mm Naopleonic Armies, and a bunch of terrain and other gaming material.

And kids under 13 admitted free to Hurricon. They get a regular badge and can play in any of the kid games or regular games admitting kids.

Sounds like fun!

All the games we've run the last 4 years at Little Wars have been open to kids. We've used relatively simple rulesets that kids (usually acompanied by adults) can easily understand. Song of Blades, Wastelands, and Mech Attack.
