Just saw this movie yesterday. Post-apoc sci-fi set on a train that never stops. Not technically VSF or steampunk but possesses certain elements from those genres. Unlike anything you've seen before. Highly recommended. My review here: link |

Saw a trailer for this the other day and thought it looked idiotic, but perhaps it was just a badly constructed trailer. May have to give it a try. Doug |

I saw it a few days ago. While there are a few ???? In the film, over all I liked it and did not feel like I wasted my time. |

Why doesn't the train ever stop? What's it run on? |

Why doesn't the train ever stop? What's it run on? The train is a self-sufficient, fully closed eco-system/environment powered by a "perpetual-motion engine" designed by a Wizard of Oz-like engineer/demigod named Wilford. It's purely theoretical of course and in the realm of science fiction, since no mechanical device can be 100 percent efficient and self-sustaining. Here's a discussion of the science in the movie: link There's a cost in maintaining the delicate balance of this eco-system, which is one of the key themes of the movie. |

What's it run on? Tracks, unless I miss my guess
He'll be here all week folks! There's a cost in maintaining the delicate balance of this eco-system, Well, that lib trope counts it out for me. |

I'll go along with the observation that it appears "idiotic", and save that 2 hours of my life to do something different. |

There's a cost in maintaining the delicate balance of this eco-system,Well, that lib trope counts it out for me. No "lib trope" about it. It is a fully-enclosed/self-sufficient/extremely limited environment. Such systems have an almost "zero tolerance" for pollution, waste or population growth. Of course, that doesn't mean the movies any good. |

Yes, please don't jump to the conclusion that just because the conflict between the 'haves' and the 'have nots' form the backdrop of this movie means that it is "lib trope" or has a political agenda. This dichotomy is not used for the purpose of self-righteous moral superiority or proselytizing but merely a means to portray the human conflict in the movie and justify the violence. In fact, the movie paints the antagonistic relationship between the rich and the poor as an essential and symbiotic one necessary in order to maintain the delicate balance of survival in a fully enclosed system, much like why predators and the food chain are necessary to maintain balance in nature. The two classes need each other to survive. One can't exist without the other. There may be reasons not to see 'Snowpiercer,' but politics isn't one of them. Trust me. |

Heh, if anything it's politics swing to the right a touch but mostly it's just a wacky jaunt that's threaded through with a fair bit of cynicism. Certainly there's a contrast to be drawn between the management of the ecosystem of the train and the management of the ecosystem that led to the train being used the way it is. I'm not actually sure if I'd recommend it though – it does what it does VERY well, but is very much style over substance. I enjoyed it, but probably wouldn't have had I been in the mood for something more introspective. To be fair, it's very aware of what it's doing and of the lines of literature and film it descends from, so none of that is a slight on the movie – and nothing about it suggests the director et al don't realise how silly the premise is. Very bloody at times though, so something to be aware of. |
